106 POSTAL DIRECTORY.
RE-DIRECTION— (Inland).
No charge is made for the re-direction of letters by an officer of the Post
Office or by an agent of the addressee after delivery, provided in the latter
case that the letters are reposted not later than the day after delivery (Sun-
days and public holidays not being counted), and that they do not appear to
have been opened.
Re-directed letters which are re-posted later than the day after delivery will
be charged a fresh postage, and any which appear to have been opened will be
charged as unpaid letters posted for the first time.
EXPRESS DELIVERY OF MESSAGES, LETTERS AND PARCELS BY
SPECIAL MESSENGER ALL THE WAY.
Messages, Postal Packets, Letters, and Parcels are delivered by Express
Messenger under the following conditions, viz. :—
LOCAL SERVICE. EXPRESS THROUGHOUT.
Scale of Charges.
(a.) For a Message, Letter, Packet, or other article the Express fee (in-
clusive of charges for omnibus, tramcar, railway, etc.), is :—
For every mile or part of a mile - - - - 3d.
(6.) If the sender desires that a special conveyance be used, the actual
cost (generally Is. per mile) must be paid in addition to the express fees.
(c.) If the distance exceeds two miles, and a public conveyance is not
available in both directions, or if the packet or packets to be delivered ex-
ceed 20 lb. in weight (or 15 lb. if a public conveyance be not available), the
actual cost of a special conveyance must in all cases be paid in addition to
the Express fees.
Exception.
Any Express Packet, Letter, or Parcel, not exceeding 5 lbs. in weight, may
be delivered by foot messenger up to a distance of three miles if the sender
does not wish to pay for a special conveyance. The Express fee chargeable
in this case is 3d. per mile. For distances of more than three miles the cost
of a special conveyance must be paid in all cases (if no public conveyance
is available) in addition to the Express fee.
Replies and Returns.
On the delivery of an express packet, the delivering messenger may take a
reply or perform a further express delivery service within the authorised
hours. The second fee must be prepaid either by the sender of the first
service or by the sender of the reply or further service.
When a reply or further service is required by the sender, the words
" Wait Reply" or " Further Service " must be written above the address of
the letter or parcel, and the messenger will be allowed to wait 10 minutes.
When a letter or parcel is taken to an address on the messenger's home-
ward route, or to an address within half a mile, more or less, of the Post
Office from which the messenger originally started, half only of the special
messenger fee will be chargeable.
EXPRESS DELIVERY AFTER TRANSMISSION BY POST.
Under this Service Letters and Parcels are forwarded by Mail in the
regular course of post, and on arrival at the Office of Delivery are sent out
by Express Messenger.
Fees.
(a. ) In addition to the full ordinary postage the express fee is : —
For every mile or part of a mile from the Office of
Delivery - 3d.
