Founded on a bequest to the city of Glasgow by
^he late James Buchanan, Esq., for the maintenance,

''The pupils reside with their friends at night, but
' I receive three substantial meals daily at the institution.
'■ They are taught reading, writing, and arithmetic,
besides gymnastics, tailoring, and carpentry, to fit
them for the navy and army, the merchant and marine
■ service, and as emigrants to the colonies. Three
1 hundred boys are educated and maintained at the

graphy, and to extend the knowledge and practice
of the same. To hold examinations, and to grant

This College was instituted with the object of
placing within the reach of women a course of higher
instruction similar to that oifered to the students of
the University. Girls under 17 are not admitted to
the classes unless they have obtained a senior certifi-
cate in the local examinations of a University. Courses
of lectures are delivered by professors of the University
and others, and instruction is given by means of
tutorial and correspondence classes. The classes for
instruction by correspondence are intended to pre-
pare ladies residing in Glasgow or in the country for
the University local examinations, or to assist them
in private study. The College library and reading-
room are open to the students from 1st November
till 31st May. Reports and prospectuses may be had
at the College, or from Messrs. MacLehose & Sons,
61 St. Vincent Street.

READING ROOM.

The object of the institution is to afford facilities
to working men for social intercourse, mutual im-
provement, instruction, and rational recreation. It
is open daily from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. The library
contains 2000 volumes, including a number of re-
cently issued works. The reading room is supplied
with all the leading newspapers and magazines.
The large halls are allotted for games, including
billiards, bagatelle, summer ice, draughts, and chess.
Annual subscription, including library, 4s.; half-
yearly subscription, 2s. 6d. ; monthly ticket, 6d. ;
do., including library, 8d. ; visitors, Id.
THE GLASGOW HIGH SCHOOL CLUB.
The objects of the club are generally to promote
the interests of the High School, especially by the
establishment of prizes in the shape of scholarships.
All who have attended the Glasgow Grammar School,
or the High School of Glasgow, are eligible as mem-
bers upon payment of 21s. There is no annual
