LETTERS WEIGHING MORE THAN ONE OUNCE.
To ascertain the postage of any heavy Foreign or Colonial letter, first subtract from
the weight of the letter all the complete ounces above one, and then having found from
the table the postage for the remaining weight, add to that postage the sum in column
D for each additional ounce. E.g., to find the postage on a letter for Australia, via
Marseilles, between 4^ and 4|- ounces in weight — For a letter above 1^ and not-
exceeding 1^ ounce, 3s. 4rf. ; for three complete ounces in addition, at Is. 8d. per
ounce, 5s. ; total postage, 8s. 4d.
Note. — It will not do to multiply the postage in column D by the full number of
ounces and add the charge for the remaining fraction, as in some cases the rate advances
after the first ounce by the ounce scale, and in others by the half or quarter ounce scale.
OPTIONAL OR COMPULSORY PREPAYMENT.
When a letter, addressed to go by a route that requires prepayment is posted unpaid,
and there is some other route where prepayment is not required, it is forwarded by that
route ; but if there be none, it is sent to the Returned Letter Office, to be sent back to
the writer.
DISTANCE TO WHICH THE POSTAGE CARRIES THE LETTER, &c.
The letter a prefixed to any division shows that the postage there entered does not
Tarry the letter from the place where it is posted in the United Kingdom entirely free
io its place of destination, but that it is liable to an additional charge upon delivery.
TURKEY.
Letters for such places in Turkey and Asia Minor as have no Austrian Post Office,
should be addressed to the care of an agent residing in the nearest port at which an
Austrian Post Office has been established. For Austrian Post Offices in Turkey, see
British Postal Guide.
It is recommended that any letters for Erzeroum and other parts of the interior of
Armenia, or for Persia, be addressed to the care of some agent in Samsoun or Trebizond,
to be forwarded to their destination.
