society was instituted in the year 1725, for the
relief of aged and indigent persons, and for the
education of destitute children of the name of Bu-
chanan, or of any of the reputed septs of the clan.
The directors have two bursaries of £25 per annum
at their disposal for a period of four years, to assist
a young man of the name of Buchanan in the
prosecution of his studies at any of the Universities
in Scotland ; and they further make considerable
educational grants to young talented persons of
the clan, whose means otherwise are insufficient
to enable them to obtain a liberal education, and
who are desirous of following academical pursuits.
