LANARK.— POPULATION, &c.
Lanark, or Clydesdale, extends from north to south, 52 miles; from east to west, 34 miles; its area is
987 square miles, or 631,719 acres. For municipal purposes it is divided into the Upper, Middle, and
Lower Wards; and the Middle Ward, in recent years, has been subdivided into two districts. The valued
rent in 1674 was £161,239 Scots, or £13,436 sterling; the new valuation for 1869-70, inclusive of rail-
ways and canals, is £1,378,687 (viz., Upper Ward, £306,126; Middle Ward, £694,291; and Lower
Ward, £378,687). The assessment for police for 1869-70 is 2d per pound in the Hamilton district, lfd in
the Lanark district, 3^d in the Airdrie district, and 3d. in the Lower Ward. The assessment for prisons
and other county rates in the Upper and Middle Wards is 2d., and in the Lower Ward 2^d per pound. The
population in 1861 was 631,566; the inhabited houses, 46,675. The parliamentary constituency in
1869-70 is, Northern Division, 5578; Southern, 2866.
