NORTH BRITISH AND MERCANTILE
INSURANCE COMPANY.

SUBSCRIBED CAPITAL-TWO MILLIONS.
THE SIXTY-FOURTH ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING of the NORTH BRITISH
AND MERCANTILE INSURANCE COMPANY was held within the Company's
Offices, 64 Prince's Street, Edinburgh, on Friday, 2nd April, 1875, in terms of the Constitu-
tion of the Company —
Right Hon. LORD LAWRENCE, Chairman of the General Court of Directors,
in the Chair.
A Report by the Directors was read, showing the following results for the year 1874 : —
FIRE DEPARTMENT,
The NETT PREMIUMS received during the year 1873 amounted to, £824,941 1
The Losses by Fire during the year were, 455,999 7 10
This embraces not merely all losses actually ascertained and paid, but includes a full estimate
of all claims that had arisen prior to 31st December, the amount of which was not actually
ascertained at the date of closing the Books for the year.
After Payment of the Losses as above stated, and the Expenses for the year, including the
Payment of a Dividend of 24 per cent., the Reserve Fund and Premium Reserve amount to
£827,238. 6s. lid.
Showing, as compared with these Funds at 31st December, 1873, an increase of £109,729
17s. 8d.
LIFE DEPARTMENT.
873 NEW POLICIES were issued, insuring £672,177, and adding to the Revenue the sum of
£21,003 13s. lOd. of New Premiums.
The Claims which had been paid during the Year were 197 in number, arising under 241
Policies, and the Sums Assured amount, with Bonus Additions, to £240,466 17s. 9d.
In the ANNUITY DEPARTMENT, 54 Bonds had been granted, securing Annuities to the
amount of £4093 16s. 6d. yearly, for which was received the sum of £37,806 4s.
The ACCUMULATED FUNDS in the Life Department, which by the Company's Act ol
Parliament, 1870, are specially invested to meet the liabilities of that Department, and are not
responsible for any other obligations of the Company, amount, irrespective of the Paid-up Capital,
to £2,396,269.
