FIRE DEPARTMENT.
Security of the Highest Order is afforded to the insured, the Fire Reserve Funds being greatly
larger in proportion to the liabilities than those of any other Scottish Company. Even if the
losses by fire were to reach Ten Times tbe average amount, every claim could be met in full
without one penny of the paid up Capital being touched.
No Foreign business is transacted.
Nearly every description of property is insured at moderate rates.
LIFE DEPARTMENT.
In this Department also Unsurpassed Security is afforded. The Valuations have always been
made at the lowest rate of interest assumed in such calculations, namely, 3 per cent., while the
Funds have been invested so as to yield fully 50 per cent, above that rate. Large Reserves over
and above the sum required by a net Premium Valuation, on the well-known Carlisle Table, at 3
per cent, interest have also been retained, thus placing the Company in the front rank as regards
soundness and stability.
These prudent and cautious estimates, which have all along been made, have had their natural
result in the avoidance of the disappointment in regard to profits which more sanguine estimates
and earlier declaration of large Bonus Additions might have caused. The Bonus Additions have
been steadily increased at successive Divisions of Profits, and they now amount in many cases to
upwards of 50 per cent, on the sum originally assured. The Bonus declared in 1871 was at the
rate of £94 10s. per £1000, for the seven years preceding.
The Bates of Premium, notwithstanding the highly favourable Bonuses declared, are fixed on a
strictly moderate scale.
The Conditions of Assurance are very liberal, and all the advantages of modern practice are
afforded by the Company.
