This school was established in 1808,
and 108 boys and 108 girls, the sons and
daughters of Freemen of any of the In-
corporations, are taught reading, writing,
arithmetic, English grammar, geography,
and music ; and the girls are taught sew-
ing and knitting ; the whole combined
with a scriptural education.
THE BISHOP'S SCHOOL,
Waterloo Street.
This school was erected by the congre-
gation of St. Mary's Episcopal Church for
the religious education of the children of
the poorer members of the Episcopal
communion. It is supported by congre-
gational subscriptions, and is managed by
a committee. It is under Government
inspection.
THE MAXWELL SCHOOL.
The Lord Provost and Bailies of Glas-
gow, Principal Macfarlan, the Senior Cler-
gyman of St. Mary's (Bishop Trower),
and the Clergyman of St. Andrew's (the
Rev. J. F. S. Gordon, A.M.), Trustees.
Mrs. Blackhurst, late of Preston, left her
means, consisting of several thousand
pounds, to found and continue an insti-
tution in Glasgow, under the above de-
signation, out of respect to her first
husband, for giving education to poor
children, vested in the power of said
Trustees.
