The object of this institution is to afford
assistance to natives, and widows and fa-
milies of natives, of the city of Glasgow,
who, from reverses of fortune or otherwise,
have been reduced to necessitous circum-
stances; though not such casual or trivial
relief as is properly obtained from the
funds destined by law for the support of
the poor, but rather such more ample and
efficient assistance, as may tend to secure
comparative ease and independence to the
parties on whom it is bestowed. It is
composed of parties born within the Roy-
alty, or Parliamentary limits of the Burgh,
though donations are received and invited
from those who, though not natives, have
been identified, by long residence or com-
mercial connections, with the interests and
prosperity of the city, and who, though
not members, are enrolled in a separate
class, titled donors. Legacies and bequests
will also be received and are invited from
the opulent and generous, either at home
or abroad, who approve of its object. A
payment of £5 5s., either in one sum at
entry, or by five successive yearly instal-
ments of £1 Is., constitutes membership.
Members, and widows and families of
members, are entitled to a preference in
the distribution of the funds.
