and, having been in business in Cumberland for twenty years, hopes, by quality of Work
and punctuality, to merit a share of Public patronage.
The following are a few of the numerous Testimonials J. B. has received : —
"Maryport, 21st July, 1846.
" We have much pleasure in certifying that we have for many years employed Mr. Jas.
Brooker in Carving Figure Heads and Sterns, and all other Carved Work belonging to
Vessels and that we consider him inferior to none, but superior to most in that Art.
We feel confident that he will give satisfaction to those who may employ him.
"K. WOOD & SONS, Shipbuilders."
(From the " Whitehaven Herald," May 16, 1846.)
Respecting the launching of a new Vessel named the ' Lord Hardinge,' the Editor
thus writes : — " She has a finely-executed and elaborately-defined full-length portrait of
that gallant soldier aud wise statesman, in the full uniform of a field-marshal, and
having all his newly-acquired badges of honour conspicuously set forth, as a figure-head.
Also a beautiful medallion of the gallant General cut in the stern carvings, with other
appropriate devices. We understand that the representation of the great warrior is a
very striking one. It is, in our opinion, as fine a piece of workmanship as ever we saw
from the chisel of that eminent carver, Mr. Brooker of Maryport."
