'Worrall's directory of the north-eastern counties of Scotland' for 1877
'Worrall's directory of the north-eastern counties of Scotland' for 1877 includes an advert for the jute and flax waste merchant James Campbell.
During the second half of the 19th century, Dundee's economy was dominated by the jute industry, and at peak times the city employed around 50,000 workers in 62 jute mills.
Arbroath too had developed a steady jute, flax and sailcloth production, counting 34 mills in the late 19th century. Sir Harry Lauder worked in one of the town's flax mills part-time until the age of 16.
