'Ctiere'* mony bra’ Jocktes and Jennies,
c^mes weel buskit inte the fair,
W? ribbons oa iheir cockemoni's,
and south o' bra' flower in their h&ir;
Maggy sie brswlie was buskit,
when Jockie was ty'd to his bride,
The powase wss ne’er better whisket,
wi' a cudgel that hung by his side.
Sing fal de ral, la de.
But Willie the msrirland laddie,
was mounted ou a gray cowt,
Wi’ his swo;d by his side like a eadie,
td ev in the sheep and the nowt:
Sae'aicdy his doublets did fit him.
they scarcely cam down to mid-thie,
Wi’ wed powder'd hair hat and feather,
wi’ bouaen, curple aad tie.

Description | Over 3,000 chapbooks published in Scotland in the 18th and 19th centuries. Subjects include courtship, humour, occupations, fairs, apparitions, war, politics, crime, executions, Jacobites, transvestites, and freemasonry. Chapbooks are small booklets of 8, 12, 16 and 24 pages, often illustrated with crude woodcuts. Produced cheaply and sold by peddlars on the streets, they formed the staple reading material of the common people, along with broadsides. |
