Urquhart Collection

Name

Urquhart Collection

Description

A selection of books from the library of Adam Urquhart (1794-1860), advocate and Sheriff of Wigtownshire (see Scottish Episcopal Church, Theological Institute Collection). They comprise 160 volumes of Italian, French and English works, dating from the 17th to the 19th century.

Organisation

The books were placed, after acquisition, in the Advocates Library shelfmark 'L.'. In the early 2000s, before the 'L.' shelfmark was moved to the Library's Causewayside building, the books were brought together as a single collection. The books have been catalogued individually and have the shelfmark 'Urq.'. Each volume has a book label recording the 1913 donation.

Acquisition

The collection was presented to the Advocates Library by Adam Urquhart's daughter in 1913. Ownership was transferred to the National Library after its foundation in 1925.
