Description

A collection of 35 18th- and 19th-century children's books and chapbooks from the library of the antiquary Miss Judith DG Scott, OBE FSA FSA (SCOT) (1917-2011). Many of the books are richly illustrated, one notable item being a copy of 'Instructions for children, teaching an easy way to spell and read true English,' ([London], 1763), by the Baptist preacher and author, Benjamin Keach (1640-1704). Scott was a noted authority on Anglican churches and cathedrals and served as secretary of the Church of England's Council for the Care of Churches and of the Cathedrals' Advisory Committee from 1957 to 1971. Following her retirement she lived in north-east Scotland for several years.

The books have been catalogued individually and have the shelfmark 'JGS.'.

Acquisition

The collection was presented to the Library by Miss Scott in 1984.
