Description

A collection of 141 works on the history and development of ships and shipping. It includes English, French and German works on ship-building and naval architecture, published from the 17th to the 20th century. There are 40 works published before 1801, including three items published in the early 17th century.

Organisation

The books have been catalogued individually but were not made into a separate collection. They are incorporated into the X. shelfmark and have the shelfmarks ‘X.21.a-X.21.h.’.

Acquisition

The books were purchased in the 20th century from a donation of £500 made to the Library in 1925 by Sir Alexander Park-Lyle, 1st Baronet of Glendelvine (1849-1938), who was chairman of the Lyle Shipping Company.
