Oliver & Boyd Collection

Name

Oliver & Boyd Collection

Description

A collection of file-copies of the publications of the Edinburgh publishing firm Oliver & Boyd, which was founded in the early 19th century by Thomas Oliver and George Boyd. In 1896 Oliver and Boyd was taken over by Edinburgh booksellers, George and James Thin and John Grant. During the 20th century the firm specialised in educational publications. In 1962 the firm was acquired by the Financial Times group and later Longmans acquired its publishing operations. The firm moved out of its original premises in Tweeddale Court, off the Royal Mile, in the 1970s and ceased operations in 1990.
There are around 2,000 books on many subjects, with a preponderance of school textbooks, dating from the 19th century to the late 20th century.
