Murray Faul Collection

Name

Murray Faul Collection

Description

A collection of 138 pamphlets and ephemeral materials relating to Northern Ireland in the 1970s and early 1980s, formed by the Catholic priests Father Raymond Murray and Monsignor Denis O'Beirne Faul (1932-2006) in response to the Troubles. Murray and Faul became involved in the civil rights movement in Northern Ireland, and, after internment without trial was introduced by the British Government in 1971, they monitored the situation of prisoners held in the Long Kesh internment camp, and its successor, the Maze prison. Topics covered by the collection include army and police treatment of civilians and of suspects in custody, the 1981 hunger strikes and assassinations by paramilitaries, the use of plastic bullets and shootings by the security forces.
