Description

This collection of 500 volumes dating from 1872 to 1995 was part of the library of Michael (Mick) McGahey (1925-1999), from Shotts in Lanarkshire. McGahey was a member of the Communist Party who worked for 25 years in the coal mines, becoming a leading trade unionist and serving as Vice President of the National Union of Mineworkers from 1972 until 1987. The collection includes works on the theorists of communism and socialism such as Marx, Engels and Plekhanov. There is also material on Russian and American history, coal mining and trade unionism.

The books have been catalogued individually and have the shelfmark 'McGah.'.

Acquisition

The collection was presented to the Library in 2000 by Ms Eileen McGahey.
