Matheson Collection

Description

A collection of around 170 volumes from the collections of Professor Angus Matheson (1912-1962), first Professor of Celtic in the University of Glasgow, and his brother William Matheson (1910-1995), formerly Reader in the Department of Celtic in the University of Edinburgh. Angus Matheson's books are mainly philological works, in Celtic and some non-Celtic languages, William's are works on Highland genealogy, history and poetry. The books range in publication date from the late 18th century to the second half of the 20th century. Angus Matheson's books were part of a working collection, and many of the volumes are extensively annotated.

Organisation

The books have been catalogued individually and have the shelfmark 'Mat.'.

Acquisition

Angus Matheson's books were purchased by the Library in 1981 from his estate. A further 15 books were purchased in 1988 from the library of William Matheson and added to the collection.
