Description

A collection of the works of Sir Walter Scott, mostly early editions published abroad and in translation, formed by David John Gilson (died 2014), former librarian of the Taylor Institution Library, Oxford. Gilson is best known as a Jane Austen scholar who published a definitive bibliography of her works in 1982 (a corrected edition followed in 1997). The collection consists of 82 works in 162 volumes, dating from 1815 to 1834, with a wide coverage of titles, a number of which are in early bindings.

The books have been catalogued individually and have the shelfmark 'Gilson.'.

Acquisition

The collection was donated to the Library in 1983 by David Gilson. He annotated one volume of each work with a note recording the source of acquisition.
