Baume Collection

Description

A selection of printed material, photographs, manuscripts and maps relating primarily to the island of South Georgia and the South Georgia Survey Expedition of 1955-1956, from the library of Louis Charles Baume (1919-1993). A keen mountaineer and collector of literature relating to mountaineering and polar exploration, Baume was elected to the Alpine Club in 1952 and took part in the survey of South Georgia under the leadership of Duncan Carse. His later years were spent as a bookseller and building up his own collection. The printed items in the bequest (20 items in seven volumes) consist mainly of periodical issues and official reports.

Organisation

The books and periodicals have been catalogued individually and have the shelfmark 'Bau.'.

Acquisition

The collection was bequeathed by Louis Baume and received by the Library in 1994-1995.

The photographic material consists of around 300 photographs taken by a fellow member of the South Georgia expedition, George Spencely, and are kept in the Photographs collection (see Photographs Collection). The manuscript material includes papers, 1924-1927, of Robert Wyllie Lloyd (see Lloyd Collection) and is held at Acc.11022. The maps are held as part of the Library's map collections.
