Broadside ballads entitled 'The Knight Templar's dream' and 'Killarney's lakes and fells'

Commentary

The first ballad begins: 'As Morpheus my sen'es in slumber did drown, / I dreamt I was climbing Horeb, a holy mound, / Where Moses was chosen Grand Master in love, / By the Great Architect, for the great lodge above.'

The second ballad begins: 'By Killarney's lakes and fells, / Emerald isles and winding bays, / Mountain paths and woodland dells, / Memory ever fondly strays.' This sheet was published by James Kay of Glasgow and would have sold for a penny.

James Kay mainly worked as a printer and kept premises on Argyll Street. This was away from Glasgow's main business area for book production in and around the Saltmarket. The reasons for, and effect of this, are simply not recorded. Kay was working from these premises during the 1840s and so it is likely that this sheet was published during this time.
