Broadside regarding criticism of the Town Council

Commentary

This broadside begins: 'A full, true, and particular Account / OF ALL / THE DOGS, / WHICH MEET EVERY TUESDAY, AT / THE GRAND TOWN-COUNCIL KENNEL, / With a full description of all their qualities, as exhibited at the / PROVOST HUNT, / On TUESDAY, 29th November 1842'.

There are many broadsides held in the National Library of Scotland's collection which express discount with the town councils of the cities around Scotland. Often the Provost himself and his conduct are also attacked. This sheet was published in the same year as Queen Victoria's visit to Scotland, which did not always go as smoothly as planned. Perhaps these situations added to the discontent which is plainly delineated here.

This style of text, with its implicit political propaganda, would not only have made for compelling entertainment, but would also perhaps have stimulated political thought, reasoning and debate.
