The Order of the Bath.
EDWARD R.I.
Edward the Eighth, by the Grace of God, of Great
Britain, Ireland, and the British Dominions
beyond the Seas, King, Defender of the Faith,
Emperor of India and Sovereign of the Most
Honourable Order of the Bath, to all to whom
these Presents shall come, Greeting !
Whereas by the Fortieth and last Clause of the
Statutes of the Most Honourable Order of the
Bath bearing date the Eleventh day of July, 1925,
power wasreserved to the Sovereign of annulling,
altering, abrogating, augmenting, interpreting or
dispensing with the same, or any portion thereof
by a otiiication sealed with the Seal of the
Order.
And Whereas it appears to us that occasion has
arisen rendering it expedient to make some
alteration in the distribution in the respective
Classes of Knights Grand Cross and Knights
Commanders of the said Most Honourable Order
and to amend the qualifications required for
admission to the Military Division of the Third
Class, or Companions, of the said Order.
We therefore in pursuance and in exercise of
the power so vested in Us do annul the Eighth,
Ninth, Tenth, Eleventh, Twelfth, Thirteenth
and Fourteenth of the aforesaid Statutes and
the same are hereby annulled accordingly, and
in lieu .of the eighth to the thirteenth of the said
Statutes We have made, ordained, and established
and by these Presents sealed with the Seal of the
said Order do make, ordain and establish, the
following Statutes and Ordinances: —
8. — It is Ordained, that the Military Division
of the First Class, or Knights Grand Cross, shall
not exceed fifty -seven in number ; and that no
person shall be appointed to this division who
doth not, at the time of his nomination, actually
hold a commission in Our Navy or in the Naval
Forces of Our self-governing Dominions beyond
the Seas of or above the rank of Bear-Admiral,
a commission in Our Marines of or above the
rank of Major-General, a commission in Our Army
or in Our Indian Military Forces, or in the Military
Forces of Our self-governing Dominions beyond
the Seas, of or above the rank of Major-General,
or a commission in Our Air Force or in the Air
Forces of Our self-governing Dominions beyond
the Seas of or above therank of Air Vice-Marshal.
10. — It is ordained that the Military Division
of the Second Class, or Knights Commanders,
shall not exceed one hundred and sixty-one in
number ; and that no person shall be appointed
thereto who doth not, at the time of his nomi-
nation, actually hold a commission in Our Navy
or in the Naval Forces of Our self-governing
Dominions beyond the Seas or in Our Indian
Navy of or above the rank of Captain, Engineer
Captain, Surgeon Captain or Paymaster Captain,
a commission in Our Marines of or above the
rank of Colonel, a commission in Our Army or
in Our Indian Military Forces, or in the Military
Forces of Our self-governing Dominions beyond
the Seas of or above a similar rank, a commission
in Our Air Force or in the Air Forces of Our
self-governing Dominions beyond the Seas of or
above the rank of Group Captain, or a commission
of equivalent or higher rank in the Departments
of Our Army, Indian Military Forces or Military
Forces of Our self-governing Dominions beyond
the Seas ; and who shall not have been recom-
mended to Us for distinguished Service in the
presence of the enemy, or who shall not have
given good and efficient Service in Command as
Flag Officer, General Officer or Air Officer, or
good and efficient Service as Engineer-in-Chief,
Medical Director-General or Paymaster Director-
General in Our Navy, or who shall not have
deserved such distinction by his meritorious
Service in actual war, in providing for the wants
of, or in taking care of, the sick or wounded
Officers, Seamen, Soldiers, and Airmen of the
said Forces.
12. — It is ordained that the Military Division
of the Third Class, or Companions, shall not,
except under special and temporary exigencies,
exceed seven hundred and two in number ; and
that no person shall be appointed thereto who
doth not.jat the time of his nomination, actually
hold a commission in Our Navy, or in the Naval
Forces of Our self-governing Dominions beyond
the Seas, or in Our Indian Navy, of or above the
rank or equivalent rank of Lieutenant-Com-
mander, a commission in our Marines of or above
the rank of Major, a commission in Our Army, or
in Our Indian Military Forces, or in the Military
Forces of Our self-governing Dominions beyond
the Seas, of or above a similar rank, a commission
in Our Air Force, or in the Air Forces of Our
self-governing Dominions beyond the Seas, of or
above the rank of Squadron leader, or a com-
mission of equivalent or higher rank in the
Departments of Our Army, Indian Military
Forces, or Military Forces of Our self-governing
Dominions beyond the Seas; nor shall any
person be admitted into this division unless his
services have been marked by the especial
mention of his name in despatches, as having
distinguished himself by his valour and conduct
in action against the enemy, in the command of
a ship of war, or of Our troops, or of Our Air
Force, or at the head of a military department,
or as having, by some active service under hia
immediate conduct and direction, contributed
to the success of any such action ; or unless he
shall by good and zealous service have contri-
buted in a marked degree to the efficiency of
Our Navy or of the Navy of one of Our self-
governing Dominions beyond the Seas, or Our
Indian Navy or Our Marines ; or unless being
an Engineer, Medical or Accountant Officer in
Our Navy or in the Naval Forces of one of Our
self-governing Dominions beyond the Seas, or In
Our Indian Navy, or an Officer of a Department
of Our Army, Indian Military Forces, Military
Forces of Our self-governing Dominions beyond
the Seas, or Branches of Our Air Force or the
Air Forces of Our self-governing Dominions
beyond the Seas, other than the General Duties
Branch, he shall have deserved such distinction
by his meritorious services in actual war, in
providing for the wants of, or in taking care of,
the sick or wounded Officers, Seamen, Soldiers
and Airmen of the said Forces.
And It is Our Will and Pleasure that these
Statutes, sealed with the Seal of the said Order,
shall be taken and received as part and parcel
of the Statutes thereof.
Given under the Seal of the said Order at Our
Court at St. James's this Second day of April,
1930, in the First Year of Our Reign.
