12. On the death of an Officer who loaves no
widow or legitimate child, under conditions such as
entitle an Officer's Widow to Pension at the highest
or the intermediate rate, the Admiralty has power to
grant allowances as under :—
MOTHEB.
The Mother maj' he granted an annual allowance
provided that :—
(a) The Mother is a widow, or her hushand la
totally incapacitated by age or infirmity,
or he had permanently deserted her and
ceased to support her.
(b) She was largely dependent for support upon
the deceased Officer: and
(c) She is in distressed circumstances, and Is not
in receipt of Pension as an Officer's Widow
or of any other charitable provision of any
kind from the public. <
The amount of the allowance shall be determined
In each case by the Admiralty with regard to the
Mother's pecuniary circumstances. It shall not in
any case exceed the Pension which would liave been
awarded to the Officer's Widow, had he left one, or
the annual value of tlie support afforded by tlie
Officer. It shall cease in the event of the recipient
remarrying or attaining to pecuniary circumstances
which, in the opinion of the Admh-alty, disqualify
her, and shall not In any case be transferable.
Fathee.
The Father may, subject to the same conditions
as far as they are applicable, receive an allowance
similar to that granted to a Mother, provided he is a
Widower and totally Incapacitated by age or
Inflnnity,

The Sister or Sisters Jointly may be granted an
allowance provided that:—
(a) The Officer did not leave a Mother.
(0) They were largely dependent on the deceases
Officer,
(d) The surviving Brothers, if any, are unablff
through youth,or bodily or mental infirmity,
to give them support,
(e; They are In distressed circumstances, and
are not In receipt of any otber charitable
provision of any Icind from the public.
The amount of the allowance shall be determined
in each case by the Admiralty with regard to the
pecuniary circumstances of the Sister or Sisters-
Nob more than £60 a year shall be granted to any
one Sister, and the total shall not in any case exceed
the Pension which would have been awarded to the
Officer's Widow, had he loft one, or the annual value
of the support afforded by the Officer.
Except in special cases where tlie Officer's Sister la
shown to bo unfitted by age or infirmity to earn her
living, an allowance will not be granted If she is over
21 years of age, nor be continued beyond that age.
It shall also cease In the event of the recipient
marrying or attaining to pecuniary circumstances
which, in the opinion of the Admiralty, disqualify
her.
The Mother or Sisters of a deceased Officer may,
however, be granted. If more advantageous to them
than the allowances herein specified, the benefits of
the formerly existing Regulations.

10. Pensions and gratuities to the widows, children,
and relatives of deceased officers, tor which provision
13 made In the following articles, shall not be
claimed as a right, but shall be given as a reward of
tlie officer's services, and no pension or gratuity
shall bo granted or continued to a widow or relative
who, in the oplnlonSof the Minister of Pensions, is
unworthy of the public bounty, and it sftall be iu the
power of the Minister of Pensions to terminate or
suspend any pension that may have been granted to
such persons or to provide for its administration
under such conditions as he may determine, and his
decision shall In any case be final.
11.— (1) The widow of an officer, including an
officer of the Royal Marines employed on board His
Majesty's Ships, may be granted a pension as in the
second column of the Second Schedule to these
Regulations if the officer (a) is killed in action,
whether afloat or ashore, or sutlers violent death
iue directly and wholly to war service, or is killed
jr dies of injuries sustained on flying duty or while
ftelng carried on duty in aircraft under proper
luthority, or is drowned while on duty, or whose
ieath results from destruction of ship, or who dies

(2) The widow of an officer of the Royal Marines oa
shore strength may be granted a pension as In the
second column of the Second Schedule to these
Regulations if the officer (a) is killed in action, or
suffers violent death due directly and wholly to war
service, or is killed ordi's of injuriis sustained on
flying duty or while being carried on dai.y in aircraft
under proper authority, or dies withn seven yearsi
from wounds or injuries so received, or (6) dies from
Illness which is certified as directly traceable to
fatigue, privation, or exposure incident to active
operations in the field within seven years after
having been first removed from duty on account of
such illness, or(c) dies in consequence of injuries
received in the performance of military duty other-
wise than under (a ) within seven years after having
been so injured.
(3) The widow of an officer, including an officer ot
the Royal Marines, may be granted a pension as in
the third column of the Second Schedule if the
officer (a jdies of disease attributable to or aggravated
bv naval or military service other than as under
sub-sections (1) (6) or 12) (6) within seven years after
having been first removed from duty on account ot
such disease, or (6) dies of Injuries attributable to
naval or military service other than under sub-
sections (l)(a) or(o) or (2) ia)or (c)of this article,
and not through his own serious negligence or
misconduct, within seven years after having been
first removed from duty on account of such injuries.
(41 The widow of an officer who dies in the circum-
stances referred to In sub-section (1) (o) or (2) (a) of
this article may be grantfid a gratuity in addition to
pension as in the fourth column of the Second
Schedule to these Regulations ; provided that, where
it would be more favourable to her the amount of
the gratuity shall be equal to a year's full pay of the
rank which the officer held on the 31st March, 1917.
