10. Succesalul Candidates will be req aired to pass
a Medical Examination as soon as possible after the
result of the CompetitiA'e examination Is known.
11. The Examination held by the Civil Service Com-
missioners takes place in London, Leeds, Sdinburfh,
Glasgow and Uuolin, as well as atthe several Dock-
yards, in the month of April in each year. The exact
date may be ascertained by application to the
Secretary, Civil Service Commission, Burlington
Gardens, I^ondou, W. 1, on or after the Ist .lannary
In each year. A fee of 2s. 6d. will be required from
each Candidate attending the examination,
(6) Candidates with Service Claims.
15. A limited number of Candidates, not exceeding
20 annually, will be entered in July after passing a
qualifying examination in April in the subjects laid
down for competitive Candidates. Candidates will
be nominated by the Lords Commissioners of the
Admiralty from the list of Candidates recommended
by the Admirals commanding the Home Ports
(including Queenstown) and Fleets, and Stations
abroad, the Admiral Commanding Coast Guard and
Keserves and the Adjutant General, Koyal Marines.
16. These Candidates will be selected from the sons
of Commissioned Officers, Warrant OfBoers, Chief
Petty Officers, Petty Officers (N.S.) and 1st Class
Petty Officers (O.S.) of the Royal Navy; Warrant
Officers and Nbn-Commissioned Officers, of or above
the rank of Sergeant.of the Royal Marines ; Estab
lished Writers of the Civil Establishments;
Draughtsmen and sldlled Artisans of the Dockyards,
not below the rank of Chargeman.
17. Parents, If serving, should apply for a recommen
dation tor an appointment for their sons, through
the Captain of their Ship, who will transmit the
request to the Commander-in-Cliief of the Station ;
or, if not serving, they should apply to the Com-
mander-in-Chief at the nearest Home Port. Royal
Marines, if not serving afloat, should apply to the
Adjutant-General, Royal Marines. All applications
should be made in good time for consideration. In
order that the necessary particulars of the Candi-
dates recommended may reach the Admiralty by the
1st Februai-y.
In all cases a full statement of the father's services
must be given.
In exceptional circumstances men holding the
ranks mentioned in par. 16 may apply for a recom-
mendation for boys to whom thoy stand in the posi-
tion of guardian. Before forwarding any such
recommendation the Commander-in-Chief should
obtain independent and satisfactorj' evidence that
the boy has been brought up by his guardian for 5
years or more. This evidence should be forwarded
with the recommendation.
(c) Candidates recommended by Educational
Authorities,
18. A limited number of Candidates wlllbe entered
in .lanuary each year from a list of boys recommended
on account of their educational attainments and
general suitability by Educational Authorities
i.broughout the United Kingdom, provided they are
found physically tit for entry into the Royal Navy.
Candidates are expected to have educational at-
tainments at least e%ual to those of boys who enter
by open competition. They should have spent at
least one year in a School providing education of a
Secondary or Higher (irade Elementary type: but
it in any case an Educatfinal Authority is fully
satisfied that the candidat>., although he may not
satisfy the above condition, has the necessary
educational attainments as a result of attendance
at an Evening Continuation School offering higher
instruction, or otherwise, special application maybe
inade to the Admiralty for this condition to be
waived.
Recommendations must reach the Admiralty not
later than 1st October each year, and no recommend-
ation received aftertbat date wlU be considered.
19. These Candidates will be required to undergo
an examination which will bo held locally on the
third Tuesday in October each year. The examina-
tion papers \\ill be set by the Admiralty, and will be
the same for all Candidates, the arrangements for
holding the examination being made by the Educa-
tional Authorities concerned.

20. On entry. Boy Artillcers will be provided with a
free outfit, and will be placed on the books of the
Mechanical Training Establishment at Portsmouth
or Devonport, where they will be attached for train ■
ing. During their training Boy Artificers will be
berthed and victualled in these Establishments, and
will be subject in all respects to Naval Discipline.
Cnder certain conditions, and at the request of their
parents or guardians living in the immediate neigh-
bourhood. Boy Artificers will be allowed leave to stay
at their homes on alternate Saturdays and Sundays.
To Boys proceeding on leave, return tickets, cover-
ing the period of leave, are issued at reduced fares
by the railway authorities.
Allotment of Trades.
21. On completion of three months' training. Boy
Artificers are allotted to one of the three following
trades : (1) Fitter and Turner (2)Boilermaker and Smith
(combined) ; (3) Coppersmith and moulder (combined).
The number to be trained in each trade depends upon
the requirements of H.M. Service.
Education akd Thainino.
22. The duration of the Training will be about four
and a half years. During this period the boys undergo
a couise of general and technical education, in addition
to workshop trc^ining. Boy Artificers who fail to make
satisfactory progress or are guilty of persistent mis-
conduct, may be discharged at any time.
Part I.
23 During the first two years they will receive
instruction in Practical Mathematics, En^bsb, Ele-
mentary Science, Heat, &o., in which subjects they
will be examined at the end of the second year.
Those who qualify in this examination will then be
permitted to take the second part of the course.
Fart II.
will comprise Applied Mechanics, Workshop Appliances,
Electricit^y, Marine Engines and Boilers, and Mechani-
cal Drawing
At tha end of their course of training an examination
will be held as to their fitness as workmen, and in
the subjects of the Second Part of the Course.
24. Boy Artificers who fail to pass in either Part I.
or Part It. will he discharged as a rule, unless special
circumstances should justify their retention, when
they will be re-examined after a further period of
training.
25. Those who qualify wiU be rated Engine-Room
Artificers 5th Class, and sent to seagoing ships for a
period of practical sea experience.
28. On completion of this training, they may be rated
Acting Engine-Room Artificers 4th Class, if recom-
mended by the Engineer Officer and approved by the
Captain of their Ship, after which they will follow on
tbe lines of other Engine-Room Artificers of the
Royal Navy, as laid down in the King's Regulations.
Pay.
2'7. The following are the daily rates of pay allowed to
Boy Artificers, each rate beiog for seven days a week : —

The advancement from one rate of pay to the next
above will be dependant on Good Conduct and Ability,
On being rated:—
Engine-Room Artificer, 5th Class . . 6s. 6d,
Acting Engine-Room Artificer 4th Class 99. 6d,
Tha pay and prospects of Engine-room Artificers, 4th
Class, entered under this system, will be the same as
for Engine-Room Artificers entered direct from the
s'nore.

obtained on application to the Secretary of the
