RETIRED PAY OF THE ROYAL NAVY. 2273
MAJOES, R.M.— HALF PAY LIST FOR.
(Order in Council of 6th Feb., 1917.)
A Half Pay list for Majors, R.M., has been established under the following conditions: —
" 1. The following may be specially selected for promotion to the rank of
Lieutenant-Colonel on half-pay, such promotion being a reward for good and dis-
tinguished service only : —
(a) Majors, on attaining the age for compulsory retirement.
(b) Majors, after two years' service as such, within such limits as may belaid dawn by
the Admiralty.
" 2. Majors so promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel on the Half-Pay List
shall not be absorbed in the Establishment of Lieutenant-Colonels unless in exceptional
cases for the ben -fit of the Service, and, except in such exceptional cases, they shall not
be eligible for promotion or retired pay under the Regulations applicable to those on the
Establishment.
".3. They will receive Half-Pay at the rate of lis. 8d. per day whilst unemployed,
and when employed they will receive either the pay and allowances ot a Lieutenant-
Colonel or the consolidated pay of the appointment thev hold.
" 4. They will be retained on the Half- Pay List until they attain the age of 54, when
tliey will be compulsorily retired.
"r>. They may be permitted to retire at any age a(: the discretion of the Admiralty.
'' 6. Retired Pay will be at the minimum rate of £300 per year at 48 years of age or
on completion of seven years as substantive Major, with an addition of «2J per year for
each year of employment as a Lieutenant Colonel. The maximum Retired Vay wll not
exceed £450 per year."
RFFKCT OF LOSS OF SENIORITY BY SENTENCE OF COURT-MABT(AL.
The sentence of a Court-Martial, placing an officer at the bottom of the list of bis rank
Involves the loss of previous time" of service in that rank; so also, when the sentence of a
Court-Martial takes away any seniority from an Officer, it thereby affects his Full, Half, and
Retired I'ay and gratuity iu oases where the s.ame depend upon seniority ; and it carries
witli it the loss of the benefit of the service, included in the seniority forfeited, in cases
where the Full, Half, and Retired Pay and gratuity, depend upon actual service.
