WAR COLLEGE.

COURSES FOR BENIOR OFFICERS
I.— Senior Officers' War Course
1. These courses (for Officers on the Active list
only) are held at the War College, Greenwich, in'the
sprinfr and autumn, each lasting abont lour months.
They aro Intended chiefly for Captains, but are open
also to Commanders and fflsg Officers. Applications
for the course are to be addressed to the Secretary
of the Admiralty.
2. The cou'se deals with strategy, tactics, and
command, and cognate subjects.
a. No examination is held In the subjects included
In the War Course.
4. The emoluments of Officers taking the War
Course are as follows :—
Captains and Commanders.
(a) Full pay of rank.
(b) Lodging money, if not accommodated,
lo) Provision allowance, if not virtual lei I.
Flag Officers,
(a) Half pay of rank.
(o) Lodging money. If not accommodated,
(o) Special allowance of £2 per day.
*. Two Military Officers, nominated by the War
Office, will be attached to each War Course.
8. Plain clothes are worn during the course.
7. The Senior Officers' Technical Coarse in some
respects constitutes preparation for the War Course,
and, as a general rule, Officers taking the War
Course should have been through the Technical
Course within the previous six months.
Officers wishing to take the War Course should
therefore apply for both Technical and War Courses,
which will, as far as possible, be arranged to run
consecutively.
This rule will not apply to the Antumn War Course
in i!>20butwili be generally adhered to for subsequent
Courses.
II.— Senior Of/Users' Technioa I Course.
1. These courses are held at Portsmouth. They
supply the latest information respecting the de-
velopment of weapons and communications, and are
Intended primarily for Captains prior to their
(a) assuming command afloat,
(6) taking a War Course.
Applications from Flag Officers and Commanders
will also be considered.
2. Each course lasts 8 weeks, and is divided as
follows:—
"Excellent" 8 weeks.
"Vernou" (Torpedo, Mining anti-
Mining.and anti-Submarine) .... 8 weeks.
Navigation School lweek.
Signal School lweek.
3. Emoluments of officers are as given for the War
Coarse.
4. The dates of courses are promulgated from time
to time in Fleet Orders, with instructions as to
forwarding applications, which are to be addressed
to the Secretary of the Admiralty.
III.— Army Senior Officers' Course, Woking.
Two naval officers of the rank of Captain are
attached to each coarse held at the Senior Officers'
School, Wokiatr, for Majors bafore promotion to
Lieutenant Colonel. These courses last three
months each, and three courses take place in the
year.
Applications to be attache! to these coursesshould
be addressed to the Secretary of the Admiralty,
Preference will be given to officers who have recently
taken the War Course, and are of under three years'
seniority.
ROYAL NAVAL STAFF COLLEGE.
1. The Royal Naval Staff College trains Officers for
War Staff Duties.
2. One course is held each year, starting on
1st October. It is open to Commanders, Lieut enant
Commanders, and Lieutenants between the ages of
24 and 34. Officers of Dominion Naval Services are
also eligible, as arranged by the Governments
concerned.
8. Instruction as to the method of app'ylng, with
dates on which applications are to be sent in, are
promulgated by Fleet Order. Applicants who are
not selected are not debarred from applying for
subsequent courses, but, on the contrary, are
encouraged to do an, since rejection in many cases
Is due to the fact that an Officer canDot be spared
from his present duties, or similar reason, and does
not necessarily imply unfitness. Fresh applications,
however, are required for each course.
4. The course consists of English, Duties of a Staff
Officer, and the study of Strategy, Tactics, and
Command.
5. Two Officers each from the Army and Air Force
are attached to each course.
Course for Secretaries.
l. These courses are held at Portsmouth. Two
courses take place each year, starting In February
and August, anil lasting four months.
2. They are intended for Officers of the Accountant
Branch who wish to qualify for Secretary, and
Offi cers who have undergone the course wl'l receive
preference in recommendation for appointments in
that capacity. Officers who have served, or are now
serving, as Secretaries. snd wish to be considered for
further employment as such,?should also undergo
the course as opportunity offers.
3. The method of applying, and dates by which
applications Bhould be received, are promulgated by
Fleet Order.
4. The course consists of :
(a) Functions of the Secretariat.
(6) Office Organisation and Procedure.
(o) Naval Law. Military. Criminal and
elements of Commercial Laws.
( tii Courts Martial.
if] International and Prize Court Law.
Merchant Shipping Act.
(/) Economics.
((j) Cyphering and Confidential books.
5. An examination is held at the conclusion of each
course This Is nor. competitive and the results aro
not published, though each otficor is infonneil what
marks he has obtained,
