1SNTRY AND EXAMINATION OF OFFICERS. %U$a
1. Before joining t'niEoyal NavalCo lege. Qre'ivwteh,
on Appointment as 2nd Lieutenant —2 serge frncks,
1 mess jacket, 1 mess vest (stand-up collar and a
black tie will be required for mess dress , 1 forage
cap (badge-globe and laurel, no bugle), 1 tin case for
cap, 2 white cap covers, 1 field sorvice cao i ornament
same as collar badge of frock). 1 pair mess overalls, 1
pair overalls for wear with Wellington toots, 2 pairs
serge trousers, l pair blue cloth pantaloons, 2 pairs
blue putioes, lpeajaeket.,1 uniform waterproof coat
and cape, 1 pair patent leather Wellington boots,
1 pair calf Wellington boots, 1 pair leggings, 1 set
boot trees, 2 pairs lace boots, with plain toe caps,
1 uniform tin case full length), 2 cricket shirts,
2 pairs white flannel troupers, 1 white sweater, 1
gymnasium bolt, dark blue, 1 pair white gymnasium
shoes, X sword and leather scabbard (Infantry
pattern i, 1 set Sam Browne belt and slings, l brown
leatner sword knot, 2 pairs brown regulation gloves,
1 pair field glasses, high power.
2. On joining Head Quarters —1 haversack (Corps
pattern), 1 water-bottle (Corps pa torn), 1 whistle
(Corps patterui.
3. Before joining Cruiser. — 1 frock coat, 1 web waist
belt and full dress slings, 1 crimson silk sash, 1 gold
sword knot, 1 waistbelt with brown leather slings,
2 pairs white gloves, 1 steel scabbard.

REGULATIONS FOR CHAPLAINS, R.N.
Admiralty,
Deeember, 1911.
Entby.
1. To render a Candidate eligible for appointment
as a Chaplain in the Royal Navy he must fulfil the
following conditions :—
(a) He must be an ordained Deacon and Priest of
the Church of England, or admitted to the
same Holy Orders by the lawful authority of
one of the Churches within the Realm of
Great Britain and Ireland which are in com-
munion with the Church of England.
(6) He must not hold auy benefice with a Cure of
Souls.
(c) He must produce satisfactory testimonials from
the Bishop of the Diocese in which he was
last licensed, addressed to the Lords Com-
missioners of the Admiralty.
(d) His age must not exceed 30, or in certain ex-
ceptional cases 35 years.
(e) He must have been examined by the Chaplain
of the Fleet, and reported by him to be in
every respect a fit and propor person to serve
as Chaplain in His Majesty's Service.
(/) He must be pronounced physically fit for ser-
vice by the Medical Director General of the
Navy.
2. Every Chaplain appointed for service must, as a
condition to such appointment, receive a special
ecclesiastical licence from the Archbishop of Cantor-
bury and his successors, such licence to be one
capable of recognition by all Bishops and other
Authorities of the Church of England throughout
the world during the period such Chaplain shall re-
main on the Active List ol the Royal Navy.
3. Chaplains will be appointed for a periodof four
years only In the first instance. They will not be
retained beyond that period unless the requirements
of the Service render it desirable, and unless they
have proved themselves to be In every way suitable
for permanent duty in the Navy. Chaplains not so
retained will be discharged with a gratuity under
clause 7 of these Regulations.
Resignation before the expiration of four years'
Service may be permitted, in special circumstances,
at the discretion of the Admiralty.
In the event of discharge after short service the
names of Chaplains who are recommended will be
specially brought to the notice of f he Bishop In whose
Diocese they may desire to take duty.

4. Full Pay :-

Temporary Chaplains will receiver-
Children's allowance— £2 a month for each child,
with a mavimum of £■* a month. Payment will be
made until they at ain the age of 18 for sons, and
22 for daughters, unless they marry at an earlier
age.
5. Half Pay :
Retibembnt.
6 Chap'ains who are permitted to resign before
the expiration of four years' Service or who from any
cause do not complete four years' Service will
not be entitled to any retiring allowance or to
either half or retired pay.
7. Chaplains who withdraw from the Royal Navy
after four years' full pay service under the provisions
of paragraph 3 (whether at their own request or not)
will be eligible to receive a gratuity of 500!. on leaving.
Chaplains who maybe retained beyond that period
will be allowed, at the discretion of their Lordships,
to withdraw from the Navy at the expiration of 6, 8,
10, 12 or 16 years' service, with Gratuities calculated
upon the following scale, viz : —

Officers are to give six months' notice of their wish
to withdraw with a gratuity, and similar notice will
be given by the Admiralty should it be decided to
terminate an appointment at the end of four years'
service.
