2329 DRESS REGULATIONS : OFFICERS, ROYAL MARINES.
Collar badge to be a gilt metal grenade, 2i Inches
long, i Inch from each end of collar. On the service
dress the collar badge will be a grenade with scroll
In bronze metal inscribed " Per Mare, Per Terram."
21A. Frock, Serge, " B."— Blue angola, tartan or
serge, single-breasted, cut as a lounge coat to the
waist with back seam, very loose at the chest
and shoulders, but fitted at the waist; military
skirt to bottom edge ; length of skirt, 13 inches
for a man 6 feet 9 inches, varying in pro-
portion to height ; step collar, depth of
opening3 about 3 I inches; two cross-patch breast-
pockets above, 6j inches wide and 7a inches deep to
top of the flap, box pleat in centre 2i inches wide,
three-pointed flap 63 inches wide and 2i inches deep ;
two expanding pocket^ below the waist plaits at the
sides, 9j inches wide at the top and 10 3 inches at the
bottom, 8 inches deep to top of the pocket and
fastened at the top with a small button, flap with
button-hole to cover pockets. 3J inches deep, 10J
inches wide, sewn into the bottom edge of the waist-
band. The top of the pocket should bo sewn down
at tho corners in such a manner that on service the
pocket can be expanded at the top also; outside
ticket pocket in the top of the waistband on the
right side ; inside watch pocket with leather tab
above for chain or strap. Four regimental ball
buttons down tr e front, the bottom one just below
the lower edge of the waistband. Pointed cuffs, 2J
inches wide rising to 6 inches at the point ; with 2
small buttons on outside seam ; shoulder straps of
the same material as the frock, fastened with a
Bmall regimental button ; badges of rank in metal.
Collar badge as for pattern " A " frock, to be worn
on the step of the collar. To be lined or not, as
required, with lining of similar colour to the frock.
The choice of pattern of Serge Frock " A" or " B "
is at the option of the individual officer.
22. Frock Coat— For all Oncers.— Blue cloth,double-
breasted, with stand-up collar, and round cuffs 38
inches deep. A slash with three points and three
small regimental buttons on each sleeve ; the slash to
be 6 inches long at the forearm seam and 6| inches
long at the end points, and to be 2 inches broad at
the narrowest parts and 2$ inches broad at each of
the three points. Two rows of regimental ball buttons
down the front, six in each row, 8 inches apart at top
and 4 inches apart at the waist. A side edge behind
on each skirt half the depth of the skirt, two regi-
mental ball-buttons on each side edge and one at
each side of the waist. Shoulder-straps to be attached
by an underpieee passed through a loop on the lower
part of the shoulder, fastened at the top by a small
regimental button which passes through both under-
pieee and strap; the top of the strap is triangular,
the sides being about Is inches long and the bottom
about £ inch from the centre point. Badges of rank
to be embroidered in gold on the shoulder straps.
Collar badges the same as for the tunic. Collar,
cuffs, slashes, and shoulder-straps to be of the same
material as the coat.
With the frock coat the full dress waist belt is to
be worn.
23. Great Coat and Cape.— Blue milled cloth.double-
broasted, to reach within a foot of the ground. Stand
and fall collar 4 3 inches deep with a fly to cover the
band of the cape when buttoned on. Loose round
cuffs 6 inches deep, 2 pockets with flaps at the waist
in front, two openings behind, at the side seams, with
pointed flaps 11 inches long ; a pocket inside the left
breast. A slit in the left side for hilt of sword to
pass through. An opening behind 19 inches long,
with a fly, two rows of buttons down tho front, six in
each row, the top buttons 6 inches apart, the bottom
ones 4 inches ; three buttons on each skirt flap, the
centre one close to the pocket ; four small buttons at
the opening behind; and five flat buttons under
the fly at the collar. A cloth back-strap attached to
the top buttcn of the skirt flap, to confine the coat to
the waist ; two hooks and eyes to the collar; shoulder-
straps on the coat of the same material as the
garment a small button of Corps' pattern at the
top. Badges of rank in gilt metal. Cape of the same
cloth as the coat, and long enough to cover the
knuckles; 4 small buttons in front, to fasten at the
neck with a i eather strap, runner and buckle. 4 cloth
tabs with button holes in the lining at the bottom,
one on either side in front and two in the rear, so as
to secure the cape to the bottom buttons of the ooat
tn front and to the top button! en the flaps behind.
In the case of Mounted Officers, the following ;
modifications will be made.— The opening of the <
coat behind will be long enough to reach to the
cahtel of the saddle, and a gusset will be introduced
commencing at the top of the slit and extending
downwards to about 24 inches, with about 19 inches
width at the bottom. A tab with buttonhole at the
bottom of gusset to close it when the coat is worn on
foot. A small pocket with a flap at the back of left
sleeve. On the inside of each skirt a cloth band with
button to secure the skirts over the knees when the
coat is worn on mounted duties. The four buttons
at the opening behind are omitted. The coat to reach
to the ankles when on foot.
Cape (Great Coat on active service or manoeuvres). —
When worn, to be roiled and secured by two brown
leather straps to the belt in the centre of the back.
24. Mess Jacket.— Blue cloth, laced all round in-
cluding collar, with J-ineh gold lace to form bull's
eye at tha bottom cf each back seam ; scarlet cloth
collar ; gold Russia braid on collar seam ; gold
embroidered grenade at each end, Jths of an inch
from the inner point of the gold lace, and half way
between top and bottom edges of collar, a loop of
gold braid at bottom of collar, to be kept fastened
across the neck, two small buttons on cuff. Crow's
feet of large gold Russia braid, on sleeve, with eye at
top traced inside and out for Lieutenants ; eyes
round top and bottom with loop at bottom for
Captains; shoulder-straps same as tunic, a row of
gilt studs with hooks and eyes up front and lined with
blue silk. For Field Officers as above, with an inch
lace chevron all round the cuff 6 inches high from
bottom with braided eyes above and below the lace.
No buttons on cuffs.
Mess Vest.— Scarlet cloth, French cut, opens inches
at top, odged with gold 5 -ineh lace, including collar,
to side seams, crows foot at each end and centre (top
and bottom) of pocket ; a row of gilt studs, with
hooks and eyes up front.
White Mess Jacket.— Plain drill, without buttons
down the front, upright collar fastened in front with
a loop of white braid ; pocket inside the left breast ;
cuffs pointed the shoulder-straps and badges of
rank to be similar to those for the white tunic.
White Mess Waistcoat.— Plain drill, without lapels
and fastened with four small gilt buttons.
25. Pouch— Full Dress.— Blue morocco leather col-
lapsing pouch, 4} Inches long,2j inches deep, outside
leaf of dark blue cloth lined with blue morocco,
stripe of f inch flat gold lace round edge, showing a
red cloth edge embroidered cross guns surmounted
by crown and lion encircled with wreath of laurel
leaves ; undorneath, " Per Mare per Terram." Gilt
buckle, ring, and stud. To be worn only in Levee
and Ball Dress.
Pouch— Undress.— Black patent leather collapsible
pouch, with two pockets, the flap 6J inches long at the
bottom and 3 3 inches wide at the centre point, having
a stud fastening collapsing gilt leaves for loops,
swivel loops. Device of gilt metal cross guns, lion
and crown.
Pouch Belt.— Red morocco tn two pieces, covered
with gold lace, 2 inches wide, gilt embroidered
buckle and slide, with crossed guns on short piece
and silver grenade in centre of gilt triangle at the
end of long piece.
26. Pantaloons (for Mounted duties only).— Blue
cloth, with buckskin strapping inside the knees and
a scarlet stripe 1$ inch wide down each side seam.
27. Sword.— Half-basket steel hilt, with 2 fluted
bars on the outside ; black fish-skin grip, boned with
silver wire ; slightly curved blade 86sinches long and
lj inches wide, having Corps' device, grooved and
spear-pointed
Scabbard.— Steel, with a large shoe at the bottom
and a trumpet-shaped mouth.
Leather scabbard for uso with " Sam Browne "
belts to be the same as that described in the Army
Dress Regulations.
28. Sword BeK.— Red morocco leather covered with
lj-inch gold lace, with 1-inch slings fitted with
buckles and billets without swivels, gilt double oval
front, with silver lion and crown mounted on plain
snake hook fastening. When the sword is not carried
the slinpa are to be taken 9ft.
