ENTRY AND EXAMINATION OF OFFICERS.

Royal Navy.
They must be In good health and free from any
Jhysical defect of body, impediment of speech, defect
if sight or hearing, and also from any predisposition
;o constitutional or hereditary disease, or -weakness
)f any kind, and in all respects well developed and
ictiVB in proportion to their age. The cases of short-
lighted candidates. In other respects fit, will be
specially considered.
A Medical Board of Appeal has been instituted to
kneet cases in which the parent or guardian of a
jandidate is not satisfied with the result of the
Jfflcial Medical Examination. This Appeal Board
Till consist of the Director-General of the Medical
Department of the Navy, a physician nominated by
ihe Medical Consultative Board, and a specialist in
ihe particular oefect which caused the disqualifica-
iion of the candidate, to be selected from a list
Jrawn up by the Consultative Board.
In the event of the rejection on medical grounds
f a candidate, the parent or guardian will at once
e informed that, subject to the payment of a fee
)f four guineas, the candidate may present himself
or re-examination by the Appeal Board, and that if
in appeal is desired notification must be made by
he parent or guardian to the Director General of
ihe Medical Department, Admiralty, within a week
if the first Medical Examination. The notification
nust be accompanied by a cheque for four guineas
nade payable to the Accountant-General of the Navy.
With a view to preventing candidates who may be
)hysically unfit for his Majesty's Service from in-
iurring the inconvenience and expense of preparing
or commissions in Royal Navy, it is suggested that
hey should undergo examination by the medical
idviser of the family, or by any other qualified
nedical practitioner. A list of the defects which
;ause rejection appears on page 864.
It is to be understood that this private examfna-
ion is merely suggested as a guide for intending
iandidat.es and to lessen the chances of disappoint-
nent, and that it is by no means intended to take
he place of, or to Influence in any way, the regular
fficlal Physical Examination.
8. Candidates if nominated will be required to
prward to the Secretary of the Admiralty (C. W.
iranch) a certificate of ability to swim.
9. Candidates will be examined in the following
objects ir. Class 1., and must obtain such an aggre-
;ate of marks as will satisfy the Civil Service Com-
nissioners. They will also be permitted to present
hemselves for examination in two other subjects
inder Class II.:—

i Certificate A, obtained in the Officers' Training
Corps, will entitle the holder to receive 50 marks
additional to the above.
An allowance of 50 marks will be given to candi-
dates who have served in H.M. Naval or Military
Forces for not less than 3 months since the date of
general mobilisation. This allowance will not be
given in addition to the 50 marks allowed for
possession of the Officers' Training Corps Certifi-
cate A.

The rates marked * are subject to revision at the-
end of the war.
The Parents or Guardians of Assistant Clerks are
required to pay half-yearly in advance to the Ac-
countant-Generai, to be held to their credit, 20Z. a year
for each Assistant Clerk from the date of entry into
the service until he is rated Clerk. An Assistant Clerk
is rated Clerk after a year's service provided he obtains
the certificate of competency required by the regulations.
(Payment of Private Allowance is suspended for
the period of the war.)
It is further desirable tbat the parents or guardians of
an Accountant Officer should be prepared to assist him
pecuniarily to the extent of JE100 on his promotion to
the rank of Assistant Paymaster, at about 21 years of
age, to enable him to obtain the uniform and other gear
necessary for a Commissioned Officer.
X A Candidate who wishes to be examined in any
modern language other than French or German under
Class II (d) must obtain the written consent of the
Admiralty at the time of his nomination.
{In view of the suspension of examinations for Cer-
tificate " A " during the war, any candidate belonging
to the Officers' Training Corps who can, before the
date of the examination, produce a certificate from
the Officer commanding his contingent that he " has
served for two years in the Officers' Training Corps
and has attained a standard equal to Certificate
'A' " will be credited with the 60 marks allowed
under Clause 9 of the Regulations for Certificate ''A."
Note.— Copies of examination papers set at competi-
tions for Assistant Clerkships in the Royal Navy, held
under the direction of the Civil Service Commissioners,
may be purchased, price sixpence, either directly or
through any bookseller, from any of the following
