2346« ENTRY AND EXAMINATION OF OFFICERS.
1. Before joining the Royal NavalCollege, Gxeenunah,
on Appointment as 2nd Lieutenant. — 2 serg« frocks,
1 mess Jacket, 1 mess vest (stand-up collar and a
black tie will be required for mess dress), 1 forage
cap (badge-globe and laurel, no bugle), 1 tin case for
cap, 2 white cap covers, 1 field service cap (orna-
ment same as collar badge of frock), 1 pair mess
overalls, 1 pair uniform trousers, 2 pairs serge work-
ing trousers, 1 pea jacket, 1 uniform waterproof coat
and cape, 1 pair patent leather Wellington boots,
1 pair calf Wellington boots, 1 pair leggings, 1 set
boot trees, 2 pairs lace boots, with plain toe caps,
1 uniform tin case ffull length), 2 cricket shirts,
2 pairs white flannel trousers, 1 white sweater, 1
gymnasium belt, dark blue, 1 pair white gymnasium
shoes, 1 sword and leather scabbard (Infantry
pattern), 1 set Sam Browne belt and slings, 1 brown
leather sword knot, 2 pairs brown regulation gloves,
1 pair field glasses, high power.
2. On joining Head Quarters— 1 pair blue cloth-
pantaloons, 2 pairs blue putties, 1 haversack (Corps
pattern), 1 water-bottle (Corps pattern), 1 whistle
(Corps pattern).
3. Before joining Cruiser. — 1 frock coat, 1 web wai.it
belt and full dress slings, 1 crimson silk sash, 1 gold
sword knot, 1 waistbelt with brown leather slings,
2 pairs white gloves, 1 steel scabbard.
Note.— The rates of pay for Marine Officers entered
under these regulations are given at page 2250.
During the War :—
1.— Any Intermediate Examinations for appoint-
ment to the Koyal Marines will be duly
notified In the press.
2.— The Course at the Royal Naval College,
Greenwich, is suspended and Officers on
entry are sent direct to a Koyal Marine
Division for Training.
3.— The practical and oral tests will not be held
at the Examinations for Entry.
4.— Private Allowance will be £30 per annum
whilst on the 5s. per diem rate of pay, and it
will be at the option of the parent or guardian
when advanced to the 7s. 6d. rate (on embark-
ation).
5.— An Outfit Allowance of £60 will be paid on
entry.
REGULATIONS FOR CHAPLAINS, R.N.
Admiralty,
December, 1911.
1. To render a Candidate eligible for appointment
as a Chaplain in the Royal Navy he must fulfil the
following conditions :—
(a) He must be an ordained Deacon and Priest of
the Church of England, or admitted to the
same Holy Orders by the lawful authority of
one of the Churches within the Realm of
Great Britain and Ireland vjhich are in com-
munion with the Church of England.
(c) He must produce satisfactory testimonials from
the Bishop of the Diocese in which he was
last licensed, addressed to the Lords Com-
missioners of the Admiralty.
(d His age must not exceed 30, or in certain ex-
ceptional cases 35 years.
(e) He must have been examined by the Chaplain
of the Fleet, and reported by him to be in
every respect a fit and proper person to serve
as Chaplain in His Majesty's Service.
(/) He must be pronounced physically fit for ser-
vice by the Medical Director General of the
Navy.
2. Every Chaplain appointed for service must, as a
condition to such appointment, receive a special
ecclesiastical licence from the Archbishop of Canter-
bury and his successors, such licence to be one
capable of recognition by all Bishops and other
Authorities of the Church of England throughout
the world during the period such Chaplain shall re-
main on the Active List of the Royal Navy.
3. Chaplains will be appointed for a period of four
years only in the first instance. They will not be
retained beyond that period unless the requirements
of the Service render it desirable, and unless they
have proved themselves to be in every way suitable
for permanent duty in the Navy. Chaplains not so
retained will be discharged with a gratuity under
clause 7 of these Regulations.
Resignation before the expiration of four years^
Service may be permitted, in special circumstances,
at the discretion of the Admiralty.
In the event of discharge after short service the
names of Chaplains who are recommended will be
specially brought to the notice of the Bishop in whose
Diocese they may desire to take duty.

Temporary Chaplains will receive:—
Pay 12/- a day.
Allowance for messing if mess con-
tribution is paid 2/- a day.
Children's allowance— £2 a month for each child,
with a maximum of £8 a month. Payment will be
made until they attain the age of 18 for sons, and
22 for daughters, unless they marry at an earlier
age.
