34. Ab the expiration ol their active service
officers will beelig'ble to receive a gratuity depend-
ing on the length of their service at the rare ul 160!.
for each completed year of service, including their
probationary period. This n'atuity will be paid to
thera on the expiration of their active service period,
35. An officer retired at his own request, or for
physical unfitness due to causes beyond his own
control, may be awarded such gratuity as the
Admiralty think fit, not exceeding 150!., for each com-
pleted year of service (Including probationary
service).
(Gentlemen entered for temporary service are not
eligible for the gratuities stated in paragraphs 34
and 35.)
86. Officors of the Royal Naval Air Service injured
whilst flying, either on duty or when undergoing a
course of instruction at one of the Instructional
E tablishmtnts,or pr vately with the permission of
the Admiralty, will be eligible for pensions and
gratuities und*r the same conditions and on the
same scales as in the case of other offl ere of the
Military Branch of the Royal Navy of their corres-
ponding rank wounded in action. Officers injured
on duty, but not while actually flying, will be treated
as regards wounds, tensions and gratuities in the
same manner as officers of corresponding rank in the
Military Branch injured on duty, but not in action.
37. The widows and children of officers dying
whilst in the Royal Naval Air Service will, subject
to the completion of the necessary peiiod of com-
mission' d seivice 'n the active list, be eligible for
pensions and compassionate a lowances under the
same conditions and on the same scales as officers
of corresponding rank lathe Military B anch of the
Royal Navy, but in the event nf an officer's death
being attributable to an inj ry sustained whilst fly-
ing, either on duty or when undergoing a course of
instruction at on of the nstructional Establish-
ments, and occurring within seven years of the date
of such injury, the award of pensions, gratuities or
compassionate allowances to the officer's widow and
children or other relative will be made. Irrespective
of the leugth of service, und r the conditions ap. lie-
able to the case of officers of eonesoonding rank in
the Military Branch of the Royal Navy killed in
action. In the event of death resulting from an
injury sustained on duty, but not whilst flying, any
pensions and allowances awarded to dependent
relatives will be on the scale and subject to the
conditions In id down for officers of their correspond-
ing raok in the Military Branch whose deaths are
attributable to injuries received on duty, hut not in
action.
38. Probationary' Flight Officers will, if injured
whilst flying, either on duty or when undergoing
a course of instruction at any of the Instructional
Establishments, or privately with the permission
of the Admiralty, be eligible for pensions and
gratuities under the same conditions and on the
samescalesas ->ub-Lietu>nants. Royal Naw,wounded
in action, and in the event of death occurring as the
result of such injury within seven years, pensions,
&c., will be awarded to i he offl er's widow and chil-
dren orother relative under the conditions applicable
in the case of Sub-Lieutenants, Royal Navy, killed
in action or dying of wounds received in action.
Probationary Flight Oncers, it injured on d--ty
but not whilst, flying, will be awarded pensions and
gratuities on the scales and subject to the conditions
laid down for Sub-Lieutenants, Royal Na'/y, injured
on duty, but not in action. In the event of death
resulting from an injury sustained on duty but not
whilst flying, any pensions and allowances awarded
So dependent relatives will be on the scale and sub-
ject to the conditions laid down for Sub-Lieutenants,
Royal Navy, whoso deaths are attributable to
tnjurlos received on duty, but not in action. But
In the event of a Probationary Flight Officer dying
during his period of probation from natural causes no
pension or compassionate allowance will be granted
to the widow, children, or other relatives of the
officer.

Observebs, Royal Natal Aib Service.
1. Direct Entry Officers.— On entry, selected candi-
dates will be appointed Probationary Observer
Officers, R.N. Alter qualification in theoretical
and practical instruction, they will be advanced
to Observer Sub-Lieutenant, R.N. Observer Sub-
Lieutenants will he eligible forpromotion to Observer
Lieutenant, to Ob-erver Lieut.-Commander after
eight years, &c. in the same way as other Officers,
R.N., in the Koyal Naval Air Servi e.
2. Existing K.N. V.R. Officers serving as Observers
will be given seniority in the new ranks as from the
respective dates on which they were considered to be
fully qualified, but without effect on pay in the case
of Officers holding temporary commissions. They
will not, however, bo placed on the new rates of pay
before the 2nd April, 1917. Observers now under
training will be graded as Observer Sub-Lieutenants
as from the date of qualification, and whilst under
training their title will be changed to " Prol ationary
Observer Officers. "
3. The pay and allowances of Observer Officers will
be as follows:—
Probationary Observer Officers, 7s. 6d. a day,
and, in addition, 3 . per day for each day on
which they are required to make ascents.
Observer Sub-Lieutenants and Officers of higher
rank, pay of corresponding rank in the Royal
Navy, and, in addition :—
Officers qualified in Wireless Telegraphy,
5s. a day risk pay, together with 3s. a day
skill pay, both payable continuously.
Officers not quali fled inWireles-iTetegraphy,
5s. a day risk pay, payable continuously.
4. Observer Officers will be elig.ble for command
of Air Stations in the same way as Flight Officers
are at present.
5. Warrant Oncers.— -Warrant Officers undert' ain-
ing for service as Observers will receive the pay of
tteir rank, and, in addition, 2s. a day for each day
on wh ch they are required lo make ascents. On
qualification as Ohservers they will be transferred
forn the Royal Navy, and given either acting or con-
firmed rank as Warrant Officers, second giade, with
the pay of the rank and the following allowances :—
Warrant Officers qualified in W reless
Telei-raphy 3s. per day risk pay, together
wito is. ner day skill pay, both payable con-
tinuously.
Warrant Officers not qualified in Wireless
Telegraphy 3s. per day risk pay, payable con-
tinuously.
6. General Probationary Observer Officers and
Warrant Officer Observers will graduate under
similar conditions to t ose governing the graduation
of Probationary Flight Officers.
Graduation will depend upon qualification in the
f oilovving subjects :—
(i) Wtreless telegraphy,
(ii) Signals,
(iii) Seamanship and navigation.

Officers will be required to obtain 85 per cent, of
marks in any group of subjects to qualify for a 1st
class certificate for that sroup, and 60 ner cent, of
m< r);s will be the minimum necessary for qualifying
in t at i.' roup.
Officers will he allowed to count half a month's
time 'or eac 1st class ceiliticate obtained, except in
the case of group 1, (nr which one month's time will
oe given. An officer who ob ains Ave 1st class cor-
tifl -ates will thus gain three months' time.
An officer wi.o fails in any group of subjects will he
gi en further instrueiion and will bo re-examined
aftT one month; officers who fail in any group
cannot gain time by obtaining 1st class certificate!
in oi her groups.
An officer s se- lority rs Observer Sub-Lieutenant
or Warrant Officer Observer ■ ill date from thr date of
graduation, except in the ciso of officers allowed to
co mt time for 1st class e. rtiflcates, whose s niorlty
wilt be anted 'it d in accordance with the amount of
time gained.
Continuous risk pay will be payable from the date
of graduation only, notwithstanding that an officer
may have gained time.
