Ing, or serious defect of sight, and also from any pre-
disposition to constitutional or hereditary disease or
weakness of any kind. The case of a short-sighted
candidate, in other respects fit, will be specially con
sidered on its merits.
(53.) Candidates for Assistant Paymasters who
pass the medical examination and are provisionally
accepted by the Board of Selection will be required
to attend a preliminary course of instruction in the
evenings, for at least a fortnight, and if satisfactorily
reported on by the Instructing Officer, they will be
given an appointment as Acting Assistant Paymaster.

2. This preliminary instruction will be followed
by training on board one of H.M. ships on the Home
Station for a minimum period of 14 days and a maxi-
mum of one month, to be repeated for three years, or
until they pass an examination and are reported
qualified for confirmation in their rank. The course
of instruction will include the practical duties ol
Accountant Officers in regard to Naval Accounts and
payments, and in regard to the receipt, issue, care,
and preservation of provisions, clothing, and other
stores on board H.M. Ships.
Note. — Acting Assistant Paymasters who are
Pursers or Assistant Pursers in the Mercantile
Marine will not be required to attend the Instruc-
tional Classes, but must perform a minimum of 2)
days' training each year until confirmed.
3. Any Acting Officer, who, after three yearly
courses of instruction, may not be found fully suit
able in every respect to hold a Commission, will no1
be confirmed in the rank, but will cease to belong to
the Reserve.
4. The convenience of the firms will be studied in
arranging the dates of embarkation, but it is very
desirable that the first period of training in the Fleet
should be as long as possible.
!B4.) Whilst embarked, every opportunity should
be taken of fully instructing them in the practical
duties of Assistant Paymasters, and with this object
they should be regarded as forming part of the staff
o the Paymaster.
2. It is to be understood that, whilst the minimum
period of training has been fixed at a fortnight, and
the maximum at a month, each year, these Officers
must be discharged in time to enable them to keep
their engagements with theiremployers. Travelling
warrants may be given to them to the place from which
they joined or to any not more distant place, and the
usual travelling expenses will be paid.
3. At the end of the course of training a report is
to be made as to the progress which they have made
and whether they display the qualities expected of
gentlemen filling the position of Commissioned
fflcers in His Majesty's Fleet.
(55.) Officers will be further expected, until con-
armed in their rank, to attend the evening classes of
Instruction for about ten days in each year; and after
confirmation they will be required to keep themselves
efficient either by attending classes of instruction or
by further training in the Fleet, as may be practicable.
'55a. I Assistant Paymasters (confirmed^ will be
a'lowed to volunteer for one year's service aflnaf,
when they will rece've pay at the rate of 10s. a day,
equipment allowance of £16 anrt will be eligible for
a bonus of £25 on termination of appointment (con-
ditional on good conduct and service).
(56.) Assistant Paymasters, R.N.R., will rank with,
but after. Assistant Paymasters of the Royal Navy.
Those who have been confirmed in rank will, on com-
pleting four years' seniority, rank with, but after.
Assistant Paymasters of the Royal Navy of four
years' seniority.
2. When on duty they will wear the uniform
| established for Officers of the Royal Naval Reserve,
I If called out for service in emergency they will be
granted the sum of £25 for equipment. Before em-
barking for training they will be expected to provide
I themselves with a Duty Undress and a Mess Undress.
1 The provision of any further articles of uniform for
' looaslons of ceremony will be optional.
' 3. They are authorised to wear uniform when
serving in H.M. Ships and on State occasions only.
' 4. They will mess in the Wardroom, paying the
j ordinary mess subscription of 2s. a day and other
j small expenses.
! (57.) When called out by Royal Proclamation for
j service in the Fleet, or when embarking for training,
I they will serve under the provisions of the Naval
Discipline A^t. and they will receive a daily rate of
I pay at the following rates : -
Under 8 years' seniority . . 10s. a day.
After 8 y ars' seniority . . lis adny.
„ 10 ,, ,, 12s. a day.
„ 12 i, „ . • , 13s a day.
: (58.) No money allowance will be granted to Officers
! attending classes of instruction.
2. Classes of instruction are held in the evening at
the Admiralty, Whitehall.
(59.) Assistant Paymasters, R.N.R., will, except
when called out in emergency, be permitted to tender
the resignation of their Commissions at any time.
They will be liable to forfeit their Commissions should
'.he Admiralty for any reason have no further need of
oheir services.
2. Officers who leave the Active List foranyreason
before the completion of 10 years' servico are liable to
be called upon to resign their Commissions.
3. On reaching the age of 40, or at their own
request at 35, Officers who have been confirmed in
their rank and who have served not less than lOyears
in the Reserve, will be placed on a retired list of
Assistant Paymasters, R.N.R. , at the discretion of
the Admiralty.
4. Assistant Paymasters, R.N.R., placed on the
retired list may, under exceptional circumstances,
be granted a step in rank at the discretion of the
Admiralty.
(60.) Officers who may receive hurts or wounds
whilst on active service in the Royal Navy, or whilst
under training in the Fleet, will reeeivecompensation
in accordance with the scale applicable in the case of
Assistant Paymasters of six years' seniority in the
Royal Navy. If i hey are killed in action, or die from
accident resulting from the performance of their
duty, their widows and children will similarly receive
allowances in conformity with the regulations.
(61.) When Assistant Paymasters, R.N.R., are
embarked for training, bedding, &c, as laid down in
the Regulations, may be drawn for them.
