An allowance of 50 marks will be given to candi-
dates who liave served in H.M. Naval c Military

given in addition to the .lo marks a'lowed for
possession of the Officers' Training Corps Certifl-

The Parents or Guardians of Assistant Clerks are
required to pay half-yearly in advance to the Ac-
countant-Generai, tc be held to their credit, 201. a year
for each Assistant Clerk from the date of entry mto
the service until he is rated Clerk. An Assistant Clerk
is rated Clerk after a year's service provided h e obtains
the certificaie of competency requiredbvtheregulationt.
It is further desirable that the parent s or guardian" of
an Accountant Officer should le prrpafed to assist him
pecuniarily to the extent of Xioo on hii- promotion to
the rank of Assistant P.<yma8ter, at about 21 years of
age, to enable him to obtain the unifo, m and other gear
neceasary for a Commissioned Officer.
i A Candidate who wishes to be examined in any
modern language other than French or German under
Class 11 (d) must obtain the written consent of the
Admiralty at the lime of his nomination.
Note.— Copiee of examination pape'-s set at competi-
tions for Assistant Clerkships in the RovhI Navy, held
under the direc ion of the Civil Service Commissioners,
may be put chased, price sixpence, either directly or
through any bookseller, from any of the following
agents, viz. —

of the Coast Guard, the Beoruiticg Stuff Officers of
Royal Marines at Belfast.Birmingham, Brighton, Bristol
Exetfr, Glasgow, Liverpool, London," Manchester, Ntw-
cistle-ou-'lyne. Nottingham, Souihampion, and York,
by the Hoyal Naval Recruiting Officer? at Chatham,
Portsmouth. Uevonport, Oxford, and 'London (East)
and by any other Officers specially authorised by the
Admiralty. They are then sent on to the nearest of
the ships or esiablishments referred to in paragraph 2,
for final entry.
(a) He must be of good character,
(b) He must be of robust frame, intelligent, of per-
fectly sound and healthy constitition, free
from any physical defects or malformation,
and not subject to fits.
(c) He must be able (1) to read a short passage from
a Standard IV. Reading Book, or if noi avail-
able, f 1 om a newspaper ; (2) to write a similar
passage of not more than six lines, slowly it act
over and then dictated; and (3) he nmtt have
a fair knowledge of the first four rules of ariih-
metic.
(d) He must be within the prescribed age limits in
force at the time. (See paragraph 1, )
This must be proved by the production of a certificate
of birth, or, when impossible to obtiiin a certificate, by
a declaration made before a magistrate by his parent
or guardian.
(e) His height and chest measurement must be
sufficient.
(f) Every Boy vnder 17 years of age must obtain
the consent of his parent or guardian, or
ne.arest relative to his entering the Nuvy and
engaging to serve until he shall have com-
pleted 12 years' continuous service from the
age of 18.
6. Candidates are not reoeived from Prisons or
Reformatories.
6. Particulars can be obtained on application by
letter or otherwise to the Officers referrtd to in para-
fraphs 3 and 3, and papers containing information can
e obtained at any Post Office in the Onited Kingdom.
No Candidate will be accepted whose Intelligence,
constitution, and physique are not exceptionally good
