34. At the expiration of their active service
officers will be eligible to receive a gratuity depend-
ing on the length of their service at the rate of 1501.
for each completed year of service, including their
probationary period. This gratuity will be paid to
them on the expiration of their active service period.
35. An officer retired at his own request, or for
physical unfitness due to causes beyond his own
control, may be awarded such gratuity as the
Admiralty think fit, not exceeding 160i.,for each com-
pleted year of service (including probationary
service).
36. Officers of the Royal Naval Air Service injured
whilst flying, either on duty or when undergoing a
course of instruction at one of the Instructional
E tablisbments, or privately with the permission of
the Admiralty, will be eligible for pensions and
gratuities under the same conditions and on the
same scales as in the case of other officers of tne
Military Branch of the Royal Navy of their corres-
ponding rank wounded in action. Officers injured
on duty, but not while actually flying, will be treated
as legards wounds, pensions and gratuities in the
same manner as officers of corresponding rank in the
Military Branch injured on duty, but not in action.
37. The widows and children of officers dying
whilst in the Royal Naval Air Service will, subject
to the completion of the necessary period of com-
missioned service on the active list, be eligible for
pensions and compassionate allowances under the
same conditions and on the same scales as officers
of corresponding rank in the Military Branch of the
Royal Navy ; but in the event of an officer's death
being attributable to an injnry sustained whilst fly-
ing, either on duty or when undergoing a course of
instruction at ona of the instructional Establish-
ments, and occurring within seven years of the date
of such injury, the award of pensions, gratuities or
compassionate allowances to the officer's widow and
children or other relative will be made, Irrespective
of the length of service, under the conditions applic-
able to the case of officers of corresponding rank in
the Military Branch of the Royal Navy killed in
action. In the event of death resulting from an
injury sustained on duty, but not whilst flying, any
pensions and allowances awarded to deptndent
relatives will be on tho scale and subject to the
conditions laid down for officers of their corre? pond-
ing rank in the Military Branch, whose deaths are
attributable to injuries received on duty, but not in
action.
38. Probationary Flight Sub-Lieutenants will, if
injured whilst flying, either on duty or when under-
going a course of instruction at any of the Instruc-
tional Establishments, or privately with the permis-
sion of the Admiralty, be eligible for pensions and
gratuities under the same conditions and on the
same scales as Sub-Lieutenants, Royal Navy .wounded
in action, and in the event of death occurring as the
result of such injury within seven years, pensions,
&c, will be awarded to the officer's widow and chil-
dren or other relative under the conditions applicable
in the case of Sub-Lieutenants, Royal Navy, killed in
action or dying of wounds received in action. Proba-
tionary Flight Sub-Lieutenants, it injured on duty
but not whilst flying, will be awarded pensions and
gratuities on the scales and subject to the conditions
laid down for Sub-Lieutenants, Royal Navy, injured
on duty, but not in action. In the event of death
resulting from an injury sustained on duty but not
whilst flying, any pensions and allowances awarded
to dependent relatives will be on the scale and sub-
ject to the conditions laid down for Sub-Lieutenants,
Royal Navy, whose deaths are attributable to injuries
received on duty, but not in action. But in the event
of a Probationary Flight Sub-Lieutenant dying dur-
ing his period of probation from natural causes no
pension or compassionate allowance will be granted
to the widow, children, or other relatives of the
officer.

REGULATIONS FOR SUPPLEMENTARY FIRST
APPOINTMENTS IN THE ROYAL MARINES.

Lieutenant.
1. Appointments as Probationary Second Lieu-
tenant Royal Marines will be offered annually to
Candidates who may pass success fully a competitive
examination and be otherwise qualified as detailed.
2. The number of appointments each year will
vary according to the requirements of the Service,
and notice thereof will be published about three
months before the examination.
3. The examination of Candidates will be con-
ducted by the Civil Service Commissioners in the
month of June as specified in Section III. The
examination will be held in London, and such other
centres as the Commissioners may appoint. The
fee for the examination in London will be 21. and at
any other centre 31., in addition to any local fees.
The oral and practical parts of the examination will
be held in London only.
4. Every Candidate for examination must make
application to the Secretary of the Admiralty not
later than the 1st of April of the year of examina-
tion
5. Candidates must be unmarried. The limits of
age will be from 17 to 19. Candidates must have attain-
ed the age of 17 and must not have attained the age
of 19 on the first of J une of the year of examination.
