ENTRY OF BOY ARTIFICERS.

tion papers will bo set by the Admiralty, and will be
the same for all Candidates, the arrangements for
holding the examination being made by the Educa-
tional Authorities concerned.
Conditions of Service undee Training.
20. On entry Boy Artificers will be provided with a
free outfit, and will be placed on the books of the
Mechanical Training Establishment at Portsmouth
or Devonport, where they will be attached for train-
ing. During their training Boy Artificers will be
berthed and victualled in these Establishments, and
will be subject in all respects to Naval Discipline.
Under certain conditions, and at the request of their
parents or guardians living in the immediate neigh-
bourhood. Boy Artificers will be allowed leave to stay
at their homes on alternate Saturdays and Sundays.
To Boys proceeding on leave, return tickets, cover-
ing the period of leave, are issued at reduced fares
by the railway authorities.
Allotment of Trades
21. On completion of three months' training, Boy
Artificers are allotted to one of the three following
trades : (1) Fitter and Turner ; (2)Boilermaker and Smith
(combined) ; (3) Coppersmiih and moulder (combinedl.
The number to be trained in each trade depends upon
the requirements of H.M. Service.
Education and Training.
29. The duration of the Training will be about four
and a half yearB. During this period the boys undergo
a course of general and technical education, in addition
to workshop training. Boy Artificers who fail to make
satisfactory progress or are guilty of persistent mis-
conduct, may be discharged at any time.
Part I.
28 During the first two years they will receive
instruction in Practical Mathematics, Erglisb, Ele-
mentary Science, Heat. &c, in which subjects they
will be examined at the end of the second year.
Those who qualify in this examination will then be
permitted to take the second part of the course.
Part II.
will comprise Applied Mechanics.Workshop Appliances,
Electricity, Marine Engines and Boilers, and Mechani-
cal Drawing.
At the end of their course of training an examination
will be held as to their fitness as workmen, and in
the subjects of the Second Part of the Course.
24. Boy Artificers who fail to pass in either Part 1.
or Part II. will be discharged as a rule, unless Bpeeial
circumstances should justify their retention, when
they will be re-examined after a further period ot
training.
25. Those who qualify will be rated Engine-Room
Artificers 5th Class, and sent to seagoing shipB for a
period of praeMol sea experience.
26. On completion of this training, they may be rated
Acting Engine- Room Artificers 4ih (.lass, if recom-
mended bv the Engineer Officer and approved by the
Captain of their Ship, after which they will follow on
the lines of other Engine-Room Artificers of the
Royal Navy, as laid down in the King's Regulations
Pay.
27. The following are the daily rates of pay allowed to
Boy Artificers, each rate beiLg for seven days a week '.—

The advancement from one rate of pay to th» next
above will be dependent on Good Conduct and Ability .

The pay and prospects of Engine-room Artificers, 4th
OlaBf, entered under this system, will be the same as
for Engine Room Artificers entered direct from the
shore.
Further details respecting the entry and training of
Boy Artificers in the Boyal Navy are given in the
special regulations, published separately, whi h may be
obtained on application to the Secretary to the
Admiralty, Whitehall, London, S.W.
PARTICULARS IN REGARD TO THE ENTRY AND SERVICE OF
NAVAL SCHOOLMASTERS.
1. A candidate for entry as Naval Schoolmaster must
be over 21 years of age and must be recognised as a
Certificated Teacher by the Board of Education or
possess qualifications which are substantially equivalent.
2 Candidates will not be required to pass any qualify-
ing examination, but they must be certified by the
Admiralty Medical Authorities to be physically fit fur
service in the Navy. Medical examinations are held in
London aod at certain other centres, at one of which
candidates selected for entry will be directed to attend
:(.— (a) Candidates accepted for appointment will be
required to sign on entry an engagement to nerve in
the Royal Navy for 12 years continuously. They are
considered as on probation for 6 mom hs from the date of
entry.
(6) Naval ScboolmiBtera hold the rating of Chief
Petty Officer, and are eligible for promotion in vacancies
to Wanant Rank (Head Schoolmaster) and to Com-
missioned Warrant Rank (Chief Schoolmaster).
The maximum number of Chief Schoolmasters at pre-
sent authorised is four and of Head Schoolmaster* 33.
The number of Naval Schoolmasters is between 50 and 60.
, Promotions to Chief and Head Schoolmaster are made
by selection from among the Head and Naval School-
masters respectively as vacancies occur. Chief School-
masters who have served for three years in that rank
may, at the discretion of the Admiralty, be granted the
rela ive rank of Lieutenant on retirement
(c) Nearly all Naval Schoolmasters serve in Training
Establishments at Plymouth, Portsmouth, Chatham,
Shotley and Qufenstown, butit must be understood
that tbey may be called on. if required, to serve in any
Naval Establishment or Bhip at home or abroad where
the services of a schoolmaster may be considered
necessary.
4. A Naval Schoolmaster who completes his first
period of 12 years' service without attaining Warrant
Rank may be permitted to re-engage for a further
period of 10 years, at the termination of which, if still
not promoted, he may retire on a pension or continue
under certan conditions to serve to l he age of 55 yeart.
Schoolmasters who are promoted to Warrant Rank
serve until 55 years of age, when they retire on pension.
They may, however, be retired at any age if found unfit
or unworthy of further employment ; and they may be
pensioned by permission of the Admiralty at their own
request at 50 years of age. At the discretion of the
Admiralty they may be retained on the Active List up
to the age of 60 if for the benefit of the Service.

6. A free kit is allowed to Naval Schoolmasters
on entry, and a Gratuity of 25£. towards the cost of
uniform is granted on promotion to Warrant Rank.
Schoolmasters are entitled to be lodged in the ship or
shore Establishment to which they are attached, and to
receive the usual service rations.
7. The pensions that can be earned by Naval School -
masters are Bhown below : —

The scales of pensions for Head and Ohief School-
masters are shown at pages 813 and 813o
Pensions are also granted to the widows of Chief and
Head Schoolmasters, and compassionate allowances to
their children on the scale shown on page 897.
