7. A Chaplain who has" less than 4 years' service
md accepts a living, will be considered as desiring
io resign His Majesty's Service,' and will not be
ntitled to any retiring allowance, or to either half
>r retired pay.
_ 8. The scale of retirement for Chaplains accepting
Livings does not apply to Chaplains appointed by
She Admiralty to Greenwich Hospital Livings; but
such Officers, provided they have completed 10 years'
ervice, are to be placed on the Retired List with the
•etired pay they may have earned by service, accord-
ng to the scale of retirement applicable to them at
Jie date of their appointment to such Living,
9.— (d) All Chaplains to be allowed, at the dis-
cretion of the Admiralty, to withdraw from the
Naval Service at the expiration of 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, or 16
pears' service, with gratuities according to the scale
laid down in the Regulations.
(b) If a Chaplain is not retained by the Admiralty
after 4 years' service, a gratuity of £500 may be
awarded to him.
(o) The privilege of withdrawal on these terms will
be allowed, as a rule, only when an Officer is unem-
ployed or serving at home. Under special circum-
stances, however, it may be permitted in the case of
an Officer serving abroad, provided he is prepared to
pay, if necessary, the cost of his passage home and
that of the Officer appointed to relieve him.
(d) Officers are to give six months' notice of their
wish to withdraw on these terms.
X.— Naval Instructors.
1. To be retired at the age of 60, or at the age of 55
in the case of Officers entered after 29th January,
1900.
2. To be retired at any age so soon as three years
have elapsed since their last service, and to be retired
at any age, at the discretion of the Admiralty,if found
physically unfit to serve.
3. To have the option, at the discretion of the
Admiralty, of retiring after 12, 16, or 20 years' service,
with gratuities or retired pay according to the scale
laid down in the Regulations.
4. Officers entered after 29th January, 1900, who
may be found to be inefficient and unsuited for their
special duties during the first twelve years of their
service, to be retired at the discretion of the
Admiralty, with gratuities according to the scale
laid down in the Regulations.
XI— Medical Officers.
Surgeons General and Deputy Surgeons
General :—
(a) To be retired at the age of 60, and to be retired
at any age at the discretion of the Admiralty, if found
physically unfit to serve.
(b) At the discretion of the Admiralty, Surgeons
General may be retained until the age of 62.
, Fleet and Staff Surgeons and Surgeons to be
retired at the age of 55, and to be retired at any age,
at the discretion*}! the Admiralty, if found physically
unfit to serve.
3. Medical Officers to be retired at any age, so soon
as five years have elapsed since their last service, or,
in the case of Officers enteringthe Navy, or promoted
to a higher rank subsequent to the 9th October, 1903,
so soon as three years in any one rank, or four years
in any two ranks combined, have elapsed since their
last service.
4. A Surgeon who, on attaining 8 years' seniority
in that rank, has failed to pass the examination for
the rank of Staff Surgeon to be compulsorily retired
with such gratuity as the Admiralty may see fit to
award, but not exceeding £500. This rule not, how-
ever, to apply in cases where, in the opinion of the
Admiralty, failure to qualify is duo to unavoidable
circumstances, nor to Surgeons who entered the
Royal Navy prior to the first day of July, 1911, and
who elected to receive pay at the rates hitherto in
force
5. Voluntary retirement and withdrawal to be
allowed as follows :
(a) Every Officer to have the option, subject to the
approval of the Admiralty, of retiring, after 20 years'
service, on the scale of Retired Pay provided
in the Regulations, or on the scale of gratuities pro-
vided therein, if he is not eligible for Retired Ray.
(b) At the expiration of 8, 12, or 10 years'
service, every Officer to bo permitted, subject to the
approval of the Admiralty, to withdraw from the
Naval Service, receiving a gratuity on the scale laid
down in the Regulations.
The name of an Officer so withdrawing will be
removed from the List of the Navy, with which
all connection will then be severed.
(c) An Officer who has served for four years (exclud-
ing time in a Civil Hospital) to be allowed, at the
discretion of the Admiralty, to withdraw from the
Naval Service with a gratuity of £500, but Officers so
withdrawing will be required to join the Reserve of
Medical Officers, under the conditions laid down for
that Reserve. (See page 867.1
Note.— This Regulation applies to Officers enter-
ing the Navy subsequent to 1st November, 1903, but
the Admiralty reserve to themselves the right to
apply it to Officers entered prior to that date.
(d) Voluntary retirement and withdrawal to be
allowed, as a rule, only when an Officer is un-
employed or serving at home.
6. An Officer retiring after 20 years' service to be
eligible if recommended by the Medical Director
General for special reasons on account of distin-
guished or meritorious services, for a step of honorary
rank, such step .to be awarded at the discretion of
the Admiralty.
7. All retired Officers to be liable, till the age of
55, to be called upon to serve in time of declared
national emergency in arank not lower than that held
on retirement. This liability not to exist in cases of
withdrawal on the conditions specified in Clause
4(b).
XII.— Accountant Officers.
1. (a) Paymasters-in-Chief to be retired at the age
of 60, or, at any age, so soon as three years have
elapsed since their last service in that rank.
(b) To have the option of retiring at the age of 55,
at the discretion of the Admiralty, and to be retired
at any age, at the discretion of the Admiralty, if
found physically unfit to serve.
2. (a) Fleet and Staff-Paymasters and Paymasters
to be retired at the age of 60.
(b) To have the option of retiring at the age of 56,
at the discretion of the Admiralty, and to be retired
at any age, at the discretion of the Admiralty, if
found physically unfit to serve.
