REGULATIONS RESPECTING MEDALS
GRANTED FOR ACTS OF BRAVER? IN
SAVING LIFE.
The Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty having
sanctioned Medals granted for acts of bravery in
saving life being worn by officers and 'n,-n of the
Royal Navy in Uniform, subject tu their Lordships'
approval ; the decoration, together with a statement
of the act of bravery performed, should be sent to
the Secretary of the. Admiralty, iu order that the
recipient's name may be registered, and tho necess-
ary authority issued, should their Lordships think
proper for the distinction to lie worn.

HUMANE SOCIETY'S MEDALS.
The Royal Humane Society having made arrange-
ments for reducing the size of their Medals, in future,
in order to admit of their being worn,— and for grant-
» Clasps and Bars for subsequent acts of bravery,
in cases where a Medal has been already granted,—
my Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty are here
by pleased to notify to the Officers and Men of H.M.
Navy ami Marines their permission to Officers and
Men to wear such Medals and Clasps when awarded
by the Humane Society.

MISCELLANEOUS CIRCULARS, MEMORANDA, &c
BOARD OF TRADE CERTIFICATES OF SERVICE AND
COMPETENCY FOR THE MERCANTILE MARINE.
Officers on the Active List of the Royal Navy not
below the rank of Sub-Lieutenant are allowed to
hold Certificates of Service of the grade of Master
(the award of which is at the discretion of the Board
of Trade), as already allowed in the case of Retired
Officers, — but Certificates of Competency can only
be granted after examination ; and only Officers who
have had 12 months' service under sa.il alone (in
addition to the further qualifying service required
by the Board of Trade Regulations)* can be examined
for l lie "'Ordinary" Certificate, i.e., for Certificates
'which are available lor botli Steam and Sailing
Vessels.
The following course in regard to correspondence
relating to the applications of Officers tor Certifi-
cates of Service or Competency for the Mercantile
Marine is to be adopted, viz.: —
l. The Officer to apply as at present to the Secre-
tary of the Admiralty, transmitting his application
through his Commanding Officer if on Full Fay.
•_\ The application bo be forwarded from the
Admiralty to the Board of Trade with the usual
statements of Service, &e.
;j. All subsequent correspondence to be direct
between the Board of Trade and the Officer.
