WARRANTS, REGULATIONS, ETC.
THE MILITARY CROSS.

George thb Fifth, by the Grace of God, of
Great Britain, Ireiaud and the British
Dominions beyond the Seas, King, Defender
of the Faith, Emperor of India, to all to
whom these Presents shall come. Greeting 1
Whereas We did by a Warrant under Our
Sign Manual dated the 28th day of December,
1914, institute and create a Decoration entitled
" The Military Cross " to be awarded to Officers
of certain ranks in Our Army in recognition
of distinguished and meritorious services in
time of War, and did malie, ordain and establish
certain ru es and ordinances for the goverrance
of the same, which rules and ordinances were
subsequently amended by Warrants dated the
2Srd day of August, 1916, and the 25th day of
June, 1917 ;
And whereas the said Warrants were con-
solidated and varied by a Warrant under Our
Sign Manual dated the 6th day of November,
1920:
And whereas We deem it expedient that Our
said Warrant should be amended :
Now therefore We do hereby declare that the
ruli's and ordinances contained in Our said
Warrant dated the 6th day of November, 1920,.
shall be abrogated, cancelled and annulled, and
We are pleased to make, ordain and establish
the following rules and ordinances in substi-
tution for the same, wliich shall from hencefort.h
be inviolably observed and kept : —
Firstly : It is ordained that the Cross shall be
designated " The Military Cross."
Secondly : It is ordained that The Military
Cross shall consist of a Cross of Silver having on
each arm the Imperial Crown, and bearing in
the centre the Royal and Imperial Cipher.
Thirdly: It is ordained that The Military Cross
may be awarded to a Captain, a ComiLiissioned
Officer of a lower grade, or a Warrant Officer,
Class I or II, in any of Our Military Forces,
and that The Military Cross shall be awarded
only to Commissioned Officers and Warrant
Officers of the above ranks for gallant and
distinguished services in action, on a recom-
mendation to Us by Our Principal Secretary
ol Stale for War. Officers not above the sub-
stantive rank of Captain wiio hold the acting
or temporary rank of Major, and acting or
temporary Chaplains to the Forces 3rd Class,
shall also be eligible.
Fourthly : It is ordained that Officers and
Warrant Officers of equivalent ranks and grades
to those above-mentioned in any of Our Air
Forces may be awarded The Military Cross for
gallant and distinguished services in action on
the ground, on a recommendation to Us by Our
Principal Secretary of State for War.
Fifthly : It is ordained that Foreign Officers of
equivalent ranks and grades to those above-
mentioned who have been associated in Opera-
tions with Our Military Forces, or with Our Air
Forces, shall be eligible for award of The
Military Cross.
Sixthly : It is ordained that anyone who, after
having performed services for which The Military
Cross is awarded, subsequently performs an
approved aet of gallantry in action which, if
he had not received the Cross, would have
rendered him eligible for it, shall be awarded
a Bar to be attached to the riband by which
the Cross is suspended, and for every additional
such act an additional Bar may be added.
Seventhly : It is ordained that : —
(1) A Warrant Officer, Class I or II, of any
of Our Military or Air Forces who has
been awarded The Military Cross shall
be paid a gratuity of £20 on promotion to
a Commission, or on transfer to Our
Army or Air Force Reserve, or on dis-
charge without pension ;
(2) A Warrant Officer, Class I or II, of any
of Our Military or Air Forces who has
been awarded The Military Cross and
who is discharged with a pension shall
be eligible for an additional pension of
Qd. a day if Fiuropean (other than Maltese)
and M. a day if non-European or Maltese,
provided that he is not already in receipt
of such additional pension ;
(3) Where a Warrant Officer who comes under
sub-paragraph (1) of this Clause is
awarded a Bar or Bars to The Military
Cross each Bar shall for the purposes of
gratuity be regarded as an original award
of the Decoration, but no gratuity or
further addition to pension shall be
issuable in respect of a Bar or Bars to a
Warrant Officer who comes under sub-
paragraph (2) of this clause ; and
(4) Awards of The Military Cross to officers
of an Allied or Associated Army or Air
Force which may be granted under the
fifth clause of this Our Warrant, shaU
not entitle the recipient to any pension
or gratuity in respect thereof.
Eighthly : It is ordained that the names of
those upon whom We may be pleased to confer
this Decoration shall be published in the London
Gazette, and that a Register thereof shall be
kept in the Office of Oui- Principal Secretary of
State for War.
Ninthly : It is ordained that The Military
Cross shall be worn before Medals in such
position in regard to other Decorations as We
may from time to time assign to it, and shall
be worn on the left brea-^t pendent from a
riband of one inch and three-eighths in width,
which shall be in colour white with a purple
stripe — watered.
Tenthly : It is ordained that The Military
Cross shall not confer any individual precedence,
but shall entitle the recipient to the addition
after his name of the letters M.C.
Eleventhly : It is ordained that reproductions
of the Cross in miniature which may be worn on
certain occasions by those to whom the Decora-
tion is awarded shall be half the size of The
Military Cross and that a Sealed Pattern of
the said Miniature Cross shall be deposited and
kept in the Central Chancery of Our Orders of
Knighthood.
Tuelfthly : It is ordained that it shall be
competent for Us, Our Heirs and Successors, by
an Order under Our Sign Manual and on the
recommendation to that effect by or tlu-ough Our
Principal Secretarv of State for War to cancel
and annul the award of The Military Cross to
any person together with any gratuity, or pen-
sion in lieu thereof, appertaining thereto not
already paid, and that thereupon his name in
the Register shall be erased ; but that It shall
be competent for Us, Our Heirs and Successors,
to restore the Decoration when such recorn-
mendation has been withdrawn and with it
such gratuity, or pension in lieu thereof, as
may have been forfeited.
