War from the attack in the
Boomah Pass, 24th Dec. 1850,
to the conclusion of the war
in 1853. Was placed by Sir
Harry Smith in command of
the isolated post of Fort White
in the em.my’s country on the
28th Dec. 1850; caused the
post to be stockaded, and with
his party ot 120 mm defended
it on the 3rd January 1851,
against a force of 1,000 Kaffirs
under Sundilli, Auta, and other
chiefs, who were deleated with
severe loss, for which service
he and his garrison were com¬
plimented in general ordeis.
Was afterwards present at both

1 Lieut.-Gen. Riddell served as Deputy-Assist.-Quarter-Master-General at the capture of Copenhagen in
1807 ; and as Assistant-Quarter-Mastei-General on the eastern coast of Spain and at Genoa, with the army
under Lord William Bentinck.
2 Colonel Michel was nominated a C.B. after the termination of the Kaffir war in 1853, in considera¬
tion of his distinguished services in the Kaffir wars of 1846-7 and of 1851-2-3.
3 Lieut.-Col. Barnes served in the Kaffir War of 1852-3.
4 Major Fraser acted as staff ofiicer to a detachment sent from Bombay in 1837 against the rebels in
Canara. He served also in the Kaffir war of 1846-47.
4f Major Hail served with the 6ih Regt. throughout the Kaffir War of 1846-7, in command of the
Light Company, and took part in all the advance operations in which the 6th were engaged to the close
of the war.
5 Major Robertson served with the 6ih Regt. in the Kaffir War of 1851-2-3: commanded the infantry
consisting ol three companies of the 6th, and one company of the 73rd Regts. at the engagement of the
Doornail Pass in the Amatola mountains 24th Dec. 1850 (horse shot), and also in the skirmish on the fol¬
lowing day between the Keiskama Hock and Fort White, when a large body of Kaffirs were defeated with
great loss (mentioned in general ordei s). Commanded the 6th Regt. on the 6th Feb. when attacked by a
large force of Kaffirs between Fort Cox and Fort White, at which time a hundred of the enemy were
killed (mentioned in general orders). Appointed Commandant of Port Elizabeth and the district of
Uilenhage in March 1851, and was placed in command of 800 levies and 100 mounted burghers for the
purpose of keeping tlie Zuurberg mountains clear of the enemy, and also the keeping open the communi¬
cation between Port Elizabeth, and Graham’s Town. Was engaged in several minor afiairs with the
enemy from the above lime to the close of the war in March 1853.
