1 Lord Strafford served with the 33rd in Flanders and in Holland in 1794 and 95, and was wounded at Geldermalscn. He
served with the 3rd Guards in the expeditions to Hanover in 1805; to Copenhagen in 1807; and to Walcheren in 1809,—in
the latter he was with the Reserve under Sir J. Hope, and commanded his advance, composed of the Grenadier Battalion of
the Guards and a detachment of the 95th Rifles; in this command he charged a detachment of Hutch troops, taking some
officers and upwards of a hundred men prisoners. In 1811 he joined the Brigade of Guards in Portugal; and in September
of that year he was nominated to the command of a Brigade, in the 2nd Division under Lord Hill. He w as present with it
in all the movements and affairs with the enemy in the South of Spain—and during the period of the Siege of Ciudad Rodrigo
he was detached in command to Idanha Nova with his ow n Brigade and some cavalry to observe the movements of a corps
of the enemy commanded by Gen. Foy, at Coria. Upon Lord Hill joining the main body of the Army at the commencement
of the Campaign of 1813 ,he w as engaged in the several actions of Vittoria, of the Pyrenees, of Paropeluna, in which action
he was wounded; in the crossing of the Nivelle and attack of the fortified camp,—wounded and had two horses shot under
him; at Cambo, in driving the enemy’s out-posts and reconnoitring the Tete-de-Pont; in the passage of the Nive and the
affair before Bayonne on the 13th Dec. 1813, when the 2nd Division was attacked by six Divisions of the French Army
commanded by Marshal Soult: in this action he had a horse shot under him. On the 14th Feb. at the commencement of
the Campaign of 1814, he was engaged with the Hear Guard of the enemy at Espellette; and on the following day was
employed in the attack of the heights above Garris. He was in the subsequent actions of Orthes and Aire; and he repulsed
the enemy at Garlin. He was alsoengaged with his brigade at the battle of Toulouse. He commanded a Brigade of Guards
at the battle of Waterloo ; and commanded the first corps of the British Army from Waterloo to Paris,—took the fortified
city of Peronne on the march, and subsequently possession of Paris by occupying the heights of Belle Yille and Mont-
matre. His Lordship has received the gold cross and one clasp for 'Vittoria, Pyrenees, Nivelle, Nive and Orthes • and
the silver War Medal with one clasp for Toulouse.
