War Services of the Captains.
the orders of his Imperial Majesty the Duke of Braganza, in Portugal, in 1832 and 1833. Was also
present at the attack on the Egyptian Forces under Ibrahim Pasha, by the Turkish Army commanded
by Commodore Sir Charles Napier, on the heights above Beyrout in Syria, 10th Oct. 1840. He has
been three times wounded in the course of his services.
114 Captain Holmes served with the 2nd Battalion of the 14th, on the expedition under Lord
William Bentinck in the Genoese territory, in 1814 ; and also served in the South of France, in 1815.
Served with the 20th, with the Madras and Bombay Force against the Rajah of Kolapore, in 1827.
115 Captain Holt served in the American war, and was present at the taking of Castine, the opera¬
tions upon the American coast, and upon the Penobscot.
116 Captain J. M. Home served the campaign of 1814 in Upper Canada with the 104th.
117 Captain Hort served with the 81st in Lower Calabria and Sicily, and accompanied the expedi¬
tion under Major-General Ackland to the Bay of Naples, in 1806. Served also during the campaign
under Sir John Moore, and lost his right leg at the battle of Corunna.
118 Captain George Hotham served at the bombardment of Algiers, under Lord Exmouth.
119 Captain Hulme served in the Peninsula from March 1810 to the end of that war in 1814, includ¬
ing the 2nd siege of Badajoz, battles of Nivelle and Nive (10th to 13th Dec.), passage of the Adour,
investment of Bayonne and repulse of the sortie.
120 Captain Humbley served with the 95th (Rifle Brigade) at the siege of Copenhagen in 1807,
and was present in some skirmishes near that city, and afterwards at the action of Kioge, the surrender
of Copenhagen and the whole of the Danish Navy. In 1808 he landed with a detachment in Portugal,
and was present at the battles of Roleia and YTimiera, the advance from Lisbon into Spain, the subse¬
quent retreat from Salamanca, action at Calcavellas, and battle of Corunna. Served on the Walcheren
expedition in 1809 ; commanded an advanced out-post before Flushing on the night of the 31st July,
when he surprised and took prisoners an out-lying Picquet of the enemy; the following day he was
very severely wounded in the forehead, when under the fortifications of Flushing, by a musket-ball
which lodged,—the ball extracted, and the head trepanned. Joined the Army in the Peninsula in
March 1810, where he served until the end of that war in 1814, with the exception of four months in
1812 ;—present at the defence of Cadiz and Fort Matagorda ; debarked at Tarifa, present at the battles
of Barrosa, Salamanca, and Vittoria—severely wounded in the left arm ; action at Vera Bridge,
storming the heights of Vera, battles of the Pyrenees—wounded near the left eye ; crossing the
Bidassoa, battles of the Nivelle, Nive, and Orthes—severely wounded in the right thigh ; action at
Tarbes, and battle of Toulouse, besides numerous minor actions, skirmishes, and affairs of out¬
posts. Served also the campaign of 1815, and was very severely wounded at Waterloo by a musket-
ball in each shoulder, the two balls having lodged, one of which was extracted two days afterwards,—
the other still remains lodged under the scapula in the left shoulder. On the passage to Spain, 5th
Dec. 1812, he was at the capture, after a running fight of several miles, of a large American merchant
ship well armed.
121 Captain Humfrey joined the 45th in the Peninsula in 1811, and served there until the end of
that war in 1814, including the siege and storm of Ciudad Rodrigo—severely wounded, siege and
storm of Badajoz,—in both of these attacks he served in the storming party composed of the flank
companies; storm of Fort Picurina under General Kempt, battle of Salamanca, capture of Madrid,
retreat therefrom into Portugal, battle of Vittoria, blockade of Pampeluna, battle of the Pyrenees—
severely wounded, battles of the Nivelle, Orthes, and Toulouse, besides numerous minor affairs and
skirmishes.
122 Captain Humphreys served with the 15th at the capture of Martinique and the Saintes, in
1809; and of Guadaloupe, in 1815.
123 Captain George J. Hunter served during the campaign of 1814 on the Niagara frontier, in¬
cluding the action at Chippewa and attack on Fort Erie.
124 Captain Hutchinson served with the 87th in the campaign of 1794-5 in Holland, and was
taken prisoner at the capitulation of Bergen-op-Zoom. Present at the attack on Porto Rico, in 1797 ;
capture of Surinam, in 1799 ; expedition to South America, in 1806 and 7, including the attack and
capture of Monte Video and Buenos Ayres. Capture of the Isle of France, in 1810; siege and cap¬
ture of Hattras, in 1817 ; Mahratta war, in 1818 ; Burmese war, in 1825 and 1826.
125 Captain Impett served the campaign of 1815 with the 71st, and was present at the battle of
Waterloo.
126 Captain Jago served the campaign of 1815, and was present at the battles of Quatre Bras and
Waterloo.
127 Captain Henry James was present at the capture of Fort San Philippe (Balaguer), and siege of
Tarragona, in 1813. Also at the bombardment of Algiers, in 1816.
128 Captain Kay served in Holland and the Netherlands in 1814 and 15.
129 Captain Henry Kean served with the 25th at the capture of Guadaloupe and St. Martin’s in
1810, and again in 1815.
130 Captain Keily was severely wounded at Waterloo.
131 Captain R. II. Ker served with the 37th at the investment of Bayonne, in 1814.
132 Captain James King served in the West Indies, and was present at the capture of the city of St.
Domingo, in 1809. Served afterwards in the Peninsula in the 87th, from Jan. 1812 to June 1813,
and was severely wounded at the battle of Vittoria.
133 Captain J. D. King served in Holland and the Peninsula, from July 1809 to the end of that
