War Services of the Lieutenant- Colonels.
defeat of the Peishwa, the death of the gallant Golda, and the rescue of the Rajah of Sattarah, the
most influential events in terminating the war. At the siege of Capaul-droog, he commanded a
battery at the storm (13th May 1819), he blew open the first gate with a galloper gun of the 22nd
Dragoons, and heading the Forlorn Hope, be stormed in succession the five distinct circles of fort-
fications, every officer and man of his party being either killed or wounded ; he received at the
summit of that strong hill fort, at the moment of success in its capture, a shot through his lungs and
body. The Governor-General of India specially recommended him to favourable consideration for
his services in India. In 1823 and 24 he was employed in the Cape Cavalry against the Caffres.
In 1841 he was relieved from a bullet which had been in his body since 1819.
151 Lieut.-Colonel Winchester’s services :—Expedition to Copenhagen in 1807, and that to
Walcheren in 1809. In the Peninsula, from October 1810 to the end of the war, including Lines
at Torres Vedras, action of Arroyo de Molino, taking of Almaraz, defence of Alba de Tormes,
battle of Vittoria, affairs of Puerto de Maya, 4th and 8th July, 1813, battles of the Pyrenees,
25th, 30th, and 31st July, 1813, affair of Roncesvalles, battle of the Nivelle, affair of Cambo,
battle of the Nive, on the 9th and 13th Dec. 1813, affair of Hellene, action at Garris, affair of Arive-
rette, battle of Orthes, actions at Aire and Tarbes. Present at Quatre Bras and Waterloo.
Colonel Winchester was slightly wounded in the Pyrenees, 25th July, severely at the Nive, 13th
Dec. 1813, slightly at Quatre Bras, and severely at Waterloo.
152 Lieut.-Col. Maunsell served with the 3d Dragoon Gds. in the Peninsula from April, 1809, to
the end of that war in 1814, including the battles of Talavera, the winter campaign of 1810 in the
Lines of Lisbon, actions of Campo Mayor and Los Santos, battles of Busaco and Albuhera, action
of Usagre, sieges of Ciudad Rodrigo and Badajoz, battles of Vittoria and Toulouse. Commanded
a squadron at the brilliant cavalry affair of Usagre, where three French regiments were defeated by
the 3rd Dragoon Guards.
153 Lieut.-Colonel Carmichael served in the Peninsula, France, and Flanders, with the 59tb,
from Aug. 1812 to the end of the war, including the battles of Vittoria, siege and capture of San
Sebastian, passage of the Bidassoa, battles of the Nivelle and the Nive, in position at Waterloo,
and storming of Cambray. Received three wounds at the storming of San Sebastian, and was the
only oflicer of the thirteenth who accompanied the advance that entered the town; he was again
severely wounded at the battle of the Nive. Served also the Mahratta campaigns of 1817 and 18;
in the Kandian rebellion in Ceylon, in 1819; and at the siege and capture of Bhurtpore, in
1825-6, as Aide-de-Camp to Sir Jasper Nicholls,—examined the interior defences of the left
breach, previous to the assault, and was the first person who entered the citadel. Commanded the
regular and militia force employed in recovering Beauharnois, Lower Canada, from the rebels,
10th Nov. 1838.
153* Lieut.-Colonel Estcourt served in the expedition to the river Euphrates, from Jan. 1835 to
June 1837, and as a mark of approbation of his conduct and exertions, he was promoted to
the Brevet rank of Lieut.-Colonel.
154 Lieut.-Colonel the Honourable C. A. Wrottesley served with the 16th Lancers at the siege
of Bhurtpore, in 1825-6.
155 Lieut.-Colonel Tronson served in the West Indies from 1808 to 1812, including the capture
of Martinique and siege of Fort Bourbon in 1809, and capture of Guadaloupe in 1810. The
campaigns of 1813, 14, and 15, in Canada, including the operations against Plattsburg. Through¬
out the Burmese war, and was present at Kokein, 15th Dec. 1826, Pagoda Point, Napadie, Meha-
die, Melloon, where the command of the 13th devolved upon him, and on the 9th Feb. 26, at the
storming of Pagamue, where he was wounded in the right leg, but continued to lead the left wing
until most severely wounded in the left leg, where the ball still remains. Served the campaign
in Affghanistan under Lord Keane, and commanded the 13th at the assault and capture of the For¬
tress and Citadel of Ghuznee, for which he obtained the Brevet rank of Lieut.-Colonel. Com¬
manded the regt. throughout the campaign in Kohistan, and at the sieges of Tootumdarrah, Jhool-
ghur (led and commanded the storming party), night attack at Baboo Koosh Ghur, Kardurrah, and
Perwandurrah, when Dost Mahomed surrendered, and the force returned to Cabul.
156 Lieut.-Colonel Moor served in the Peninsula from June 1809 to June 1813, including the
battles of Busaco, Fuentes d’Onor, and Salamanca ; sieges of Ciudad Rodrigo and Badajoz, action
at Castrajon, and twelve other affairs with the enemy.
157 Lieut.-Colonel Marlay served at the battle of Trafalgar.
158 Lieut.-Colonel Dunn served the campaign of 1805, in Italy; battle of Maida, and capture
of Scylla Castle, in 1806 ; expedition to Egypt, in 1807, including the attack on Alexandria and
Rosetta, and battle of El Hamet (taken prisoner). Defence of Scylla Castle, in 1808 ; Peninsular
campaigns of 1810 and 11, including the siege of Ciudad Rodrigo, operations between the Aguada
and Almeida, battles of the Coa, Busaco, and Albuhera ; actions at Usagre and Aldea de Ponte,
at which last he was severely wounded in the groin by a musket-ball, which remains unextracted.
Served also in the American war in 1814, including the taking of Moose Island, and occupation of
Castine.
159 Lieut.-Colonel Pratt served on the China expedition, and commanded the land forces at the
assault and capture of the Forts of Chuenpee on the 7th Jan, 1841, and again at the assault and
capture of the Bogue Forts on the 26th Feb. following. Commanded the 26th at the attacks on
Canton from 24th May to 1st June; also at the night attack on Ningpo, at Segoan, Chapoo,
Woosung and Shanghai, and at Chin Kiang Foo.
