War Services of the Lieutenant- Colonels.
1803 ; the campaign of 1808-9 in Spain, including the battle of Corunua. Also the campaigns of
1811, 12, 13, 14, and 15, under the Duke of Wellington, including the second siege of Badajoz,
battles of Vittoria, the Pyrenees (on the 26th and 28th July), heights of Lesaca, Nivelle and St.
Pe, Orthes, and Waterloo; and storming of Cambray.
79 Lieut.-Colonel Chester served in Holland in 1799, and was present in the action near
Bergen, 2nd Oct. Served also the campaign of 1808-9 in Spain, including the actions at Bene-
vente, Villa Franca, and Lugo, and retreat to Corunna.
80 Lieut.-Col. Dixon served with the 11th at the capture of the Danish, Swedish, French, and
Dutch colonies in the West Indies, in 1801, under Sir Thomas Trigge.
81 Lieut.-Col. Geddes served with the 27th in Calabria, in 1806 ; at the capture of the island
of Procida, in 1809 ; in Sicily in 1810 ; and subsequently in the Peninsula, including the battles
of the Nivelle, the Nive, Orthes, and Toulouse, at which last he received a severe wound which
broke the left thighbone near the hip-joint.
82 Lieut.-Colonel Gilmour served at the capture of Ischia, Zante, and Cephalonia, in 1809; and
of Santa Maura, in 1810. Served afterwards on the eastern coast of Spain, and was present at the
battle of Castalla ; engaged with the enemy on several occasions covering the retreat; and
employed in the batteries against Tarragona. After leaving Spain he went to Genoa, under Lord
Wm. Bentinck.
83 Lieut.-Colonel Leslie served with the 29th, on the secret expedition under Sir Brent Spencer,
and subsequently in the Peninsula from Aug. 1808 to Dec. 1811, and again from Feb. 1813, includ¬
ing the battles of Roleia and Vimiera, capture of Oporto, battle of Talavera, first siege of Badajoz,
and battle of Albuhera, besides skirmishes and affrays at out-posts. At the battle of Talavera he
was severely wounded in the right leg, where the ball still remains.
84 Lieut.-Colonel Wolrige was present at the attack on New Orleans, on the 8th Jan. 1815.
85 Lieut.-Colonel Beckwith served in the Peninsula with the 16th Light Dragoons, from July
1813 to the end of that war in 1814, including the battle of the Nivelle, and battles of the Nive on
the 9th and 10th Dec. Served also the campaign of 1815, and was present at the retreat on the 17th
June and at the battle of Waterloo.
86 Lieut.-Colonel Robertson served with the 25th at the taking of Madeira in 1807 ; at the cap¬
ture of Guadaloupe, in 1810 ; and again in 1815.
86* Lieut.-Colonel Robinson served in the Peninsula from June 1809 to October 1813, includ¬
ing the battles of Talavera and Busaco, lines at Torres Vedras, pursuit of Massena, action at Campo
Mayor, siege of Ciudad Rodrigo, siege and storming of Badajoz (shot through the left arm at the
assault, 6th April, 1812); battle of Salamanca, retreat from Madrid, battles of Vittoria and the
Pyrenees, (severely wounded, left leg fractured) 28th July, 1813.
87 Lieut.-Colonel Maclean served with the 13th Light Dragoons in every action and affair in
which it was engaged in the Peninsula, from Dec. 1810 until wounded and taken prisoner at
Couches, 13th March 1814. Was present with his regiment during the Waterloo campaign;
engaged in command of the rear-guard for the brigade on the 7th June, and throughout the action
on the 18th. Accompanied the 13th Dragoons to India in Feb. 1819 ; was employed in command
of a cavalry brigade with the field force at the reduction of Kurnool, and served uninterruptedly
with his regiment for twenty-two years, when he returned with it to England, and was placed on
half-pay as 2nd Lieut.-'Colonel.
88 Lieut.-Colonel Gawler served in the Peninsula with the 52d from Nov. 1811 to the end of
that war in 1814, including the siege and assault of Badajoz, battles of Vittoria, pass of Vera, the
Nivelle, the Nive, Ortbes, and Toulouse, besides various minor affairs. Served also the campaign
of 1815, and was present at the battle of Waterloo. Wounded below the right knee by a musket-
shot at the storming of Badajoz, and in the neck by a musket-shot at San Munos.
89 Lieut.-Colonel Kettlewell served at Copenhagen, in 1807 ; and in Ceylon during the rebel¬
lion in 1817 and 18.
90 Lieut.-Colonel Marshall served at the battle of Copenhagen.
91 Lieut.-Colonel Firman served in the Peninsula with the 82d, in 1812 and 13, and was pre¬
sent during the retreat from Madrid, at the battle of Vittoria, and at the pass of Maya, at which last
he was twice wounded.
92 Lieut.-Colonel Ball served in the Peninsula with the 34th, from June 1809 to Nov. 1813, in¬
cluding the battles of Busaco and Albuhera, siege of Badajoz in May 1811, actions at Arroyo de
Molino and Almaraz, battle of Vittoria (wounded in the head), and actions at the pass of Maya
(severely wounded in the left leg).
93 Lieut.-Colonel Hughes served the Egyptian campaign of 1801, with the 24tb. Engaged with
a French squadron in the Mosambique channel, 3d July, 1810. Served the Nepaul campaigns of
1814, 15, and 16, and was wounded at Harriapore. Served also during the Mahratta war of 1816,
17, and 18. Medal for services in Egypt.
94 Lieut.-Colonel Wm. Cox served with the 95th (Rifle Brigade) at Copenhagen, in 1807, and
was present in some skirmishes near that city, and afterwards at the action of Kioge. Served af¬
terwards in the Peninsula from June 1808 to Jan. 1809, from May 1809 to Sept. 1810, and from
Sept. 1812 to May 1814, including the skirmish at Obidos, battles of Roleia and Vimiera, retreat
to Corunna, battles of Vittoria, Nivelle, and Nive : passage of the Bidassoa, battle of Orthes, and
affair of Tarbes. Severely wounded through the right leg by a musket-shot at Vittoria; in the left
