War Services of the General Officers.
Sir G. Ludlow. Embarked with the 23rd Dragoons for Lisbon, in 1809, and was wounded at the
battle of Talavera. Early in 1810, proceeded to Cadiz, then besieged by the French, as Aide-de-
Camp to Lord Lynedocb, and was afterwards present at the battle of Barrosa. Served subsequently
as Aide-de-Camp to the Duke of Wellington, and was present at the battle of Vittoria, siege of San
Sebastian, battles of Orthes and Toulouse. Medal for Toulouse.
157 Major-General Wynyard served with the army in Sicily from 1808 to March 1810, when he
was severely wounded at the attack on Santa Maura, for which he subsequently obtained the Brevet-
rank of Major ; he was also present and on the staff with the force that occupied Ischia and Procida.
158 Major-General Fergusson served the campaign of 1808—9, including the battles of Vimiera
and Corunna. Expedition to Walcheren, in 1809. Peninsular campaigns from March 1810 to the
end of that war in 1814, including the passage of the Coa near Almeida, battle of Busaco, actions at
Pombal, Redinha, Miranda de Corvo, Foz d'Arouce, and Sabugal; battle of Fuentes d’Ouor, sieges
and assaults of Ciudad Rodrigo and Badajoz, battle of Salamanca, action of San Munos, passage of
the Bidassoa, battle of the Nivelle, battles of the Nive on the 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th, and 13th Dec.
1813 ; and investment of Bayonne. Major-General Fergusson has received five wounds, viz.: at
Vimiera slightly ; at the storming of Ciudad Rodrigo, severely in the body, and slightly in the foot ;
at Badajoz slightly in the side by a splinter of a shell in the trenches, and in the head at the assault.
Medal for Badajoz.
159 Major-General Brotherton served in the Peninsula, and was wounded at the battle of Salamanca.
160 Sir James Reynett served with the 52nd on the expedition against Ferrol in 1800, and was present
at the action before that place. Appointed to the Quarter-Master-General’sstaff upon the army entering
Spain in Nov. 1808 ; present at Lugo, the affairs upon the retreat to Corunna, and also at the battle
of Corunna. Re-appointed to the Quarter-Master-General’s staff in Portugal, in April 1809; present
at the affairs previous to, and at the passage of the Douro and capture of Oporto ; affair of Salamonde,
battles of Talavera and Busaco, affairs upon the retreat to the lines before Lisbon, and subsequently in
1811 at those upon the advance from thence, at Pombal, Redinha, Sabugal, and Foz d’Arouce ; also
at the battle of Fuentes d’Onor.
161 Major-General Smelt served in the American war, and was present at the taking of Plattsburg,
storm and capture of Oswego, action of Lundy’s Lane, storming of Fort Erie, 13th Aug. 1814, where
he was severely and dangerously wounded. Served also during the Burmese war, in 1824, 25, and
part of 1826, and was present at the capture of Rangoon, and other actions in Ava.
162 Major-General Bell served in Sicily, in 1806 and 7 ; in the Peninsula and France, from July
1808 to Feb. 1809, and again from May 1809 to July 1814, including the battle of Vimiera, action at
the bridge of Almeida, battle of Busaco, all the actions during the retreat of the French from Portugal,
siege and storming of Ciudad Rodrigo, siege and storming of Badajoz, action at the heights of Cas-
trillos, battle of Salamanca, action of Sabijana de Morillos, battles of Vittoria, the Pyrenees, Nivelle,
Orthes, and Toulouse. Served afterwards with the army employed against Louisiana, from Dec. 1814,
to June 1815. He has received a cross for the battles of the Pyrenees, Nivelle, Orthes, and Toulouse.
163 Major-General Auchmuty served in the Peninsula, and has received a medal and a clasp for
the battles of Orthes and Toulouse.
164 Major-General Lightfoot served in Holland, in 1799. Accompanied the 45th to the Peninsula
in 1808, and was present at the battles of Roleia, Vimiera, Talavera, and Busaco ; actions of Pombal,
Redinha, Condeixa, and Sabugal; battle of Fuentes d’Onor, siege of Badajoz, in 1811 ; siege and
assault of Ciudad Rodrigo, siege and assault of Badajoz (slightly wounded), storming of Fort Picurina
(slightly wounded), battles of Salamanca, Vittoria, and the Pyrenees ; attack on the lines at St. Jean
de Luz, affair at Bastide, and the battles of Orthes and Toulouse (severely wounded). Medal and
two clasps for Vittoria, Pyrenees, and Toulouse.
165 Major-General Faunce served in Holland, in 1799, including the actions of the 2nd and 6th
October. With the army in Hanover, in 1805—6; siege and capture of Copenhagen, in 1807 ; with
the army under Sir John Moore, first at Goltenburgh, and afterwards throughout the operations in
Portugal and Spain, in 1808—9 ; with the army in the Scheldt, in 1809; in the Peninsula from Nov.
1810 to Feb. 1813, including the storm and capture of Badajoz (wounded in the thigh), and battle of
Salamanca; also at the investment of Bayonne, in 1814. Served also in the American war, including
the battle of Bladensburg and capture of Washington, action near Baltimore, and operations before
New Orleans in 1814 and 15 ; severely wounded 8th Jan. 1815. Medal for Salamanca.
166 Major-General Brown served at the siege and capture of Copenhagen, in 1807 ; in the
Peninsula from Aug. 1808 to July 1811, and again from July 1813 to May 1814, including the battle
of Vimiera, passage of the Douro and capture of Oporto, with the previous and subsequent actions;
battle of Talavera (severely wounded through both thighs), action of the Light Division at the bridge of
Almeida, battle of Busaco, the different actions during the retreat of the French army from Portugal,
action at Sabugal, battle of Fuentes d’Onor, siege of San Sebastian, battles of the Nivelle and Nive,
and the investment of Bayonne. Served afterwards in the American war, and was present at the
battle of Bladensburg and capture of Washington. Slightly wounded in the head and very severely in
the groin at Bladensburg.
167 Major-General Wingrove served at the taking of the Cape of Good Hope, in 1795; at the
battle of Trafalgar ; the taking of Genoa, in 1814 ; on board the Boyne when that ship singly engaged
three French ships of the line and three frigates off Toulon, in 1814 ; and on board the Hercule in a
single action off Cape Nichola Mole.
