War Services of the General Officers.
General in Upper Canada, during the campaigns of 1813 and 14, including the first action of Fort
George, surprise and defeat of the enemy at Stoney Creek, defeat of the enemy at Chrystler’s farm
(medal), capture of -Fort Niagara, Black Rock, Buffalo, and Oswego, battle of Lundy’s Lane, siege
and assault of Fort Erie, and sortie on the 17th September following. Severely wounded at the siege
of Fort Erie 6lh Aug. 1814.
94 Sir Leonard Greenwell accompanied the expedition to South America, under Colonel Craufurd,
and was severely wounded at the attack on Buenos Ayres. Landed in Portugal with the 45th, in Aug.
1808, and served throughout the Peninsular war, except on two occasions when absent in consequence
of wounds, including the battles of Roleia, Vimiera, Talavera, and Busaco, and lines at Torres
Vedras. Commanded the 45th during the pursuit of the French army under Massena, at the actions
of Pombal, Foz d’Arouce, and Sabugal, battle of Fuentes d’Onor, siege of Badajoz in 1811, storm and
capture of Badajoz ; present also at the battle of Salamanca, and battles of the lllh, Pith, 13th Dec.
1813 in front of Bayonne ; and commanded the Light Infantry of the third division, under Sir Thomas
Picton, at the battle of Orthes. In the course of these services Sir Leonard has been shot through
the neck, the body, right arm, musket ball lodged in the left arm, and likewise shot in the left leg.

95 Sir George Scovell served the campaign under Sir John Moore, terminating with the battle of
Corunna, at which he was present as Deputy-Assistant-Quarter-Master-General. Afterwards in the
Peninsula in the same department at the head-quarters under the Duke of Wellington, from Feb. 1809
to the end of that war in 1814, and was present at the passage of the Douro and pursuit of Marshal
Soult, battles of Talavera, Busaco, and Fuentes d’Onor; sieges of Ciudad Rodrigo and Badajoz, battle
of Salamanca, siege of Burgos, battles of Vittoria, the Pyrenees, Nivelle, and Nive ; passage of the
A dour, and battle of Toulouse. Served also the campaign of 1815, including the battle of Waterloo,
Sir George has received a cross and one clasp.
96 Lord Downes was appointed Aide-de-Camp to Sir John Cradock, whom he accompanied to Por¬
tugal in Nov. 1808, where Sir John held the chief command until May 1809, when he was succeeded
by the Duke of Wellington, with whom Lord Downes continued as Aide-de-Camp and Assistant Mili¬
tary Secretary during the whole war, and was present at the battles of Talavera (slightly wounded),
Busaco, Fuentes d’Onor, and El Bodon; sieges of Ciudad Rodrigo and Badajoz, battles of Salamanca,
Vittoria, and the Pyrenees ; siege of San Sebastian, battles of the Nivelle, Nive, and Toulouse (slightly
wounded). His Lordship has received a cross and one clasp.
97 Sir Robert Dick embarked with the 2nd battalion of the 78th for Sicily, in 1806, and was
wounded at the battle of Maida ; present also at the taking of the fortress of Catrone in Calabria. In
1807 accompanied the expedition to Egypt, and was present at the taking of Alexandria, and severely
wounded before Rosetta. Embarked with the 2nd battalion of the 42nd for the Peninsula, in June
1809, and commanded a light battalion at the battle of Busaco, during the retreat to the lines of Torres
Vedras, action at Foz d’Arouce (wounded), battle of Fuentes d’Onor, commanded the 2nd battalion
42nd during the siege of Ciudad Rodrigo and the 1st in covering the siege of Badajoz; a light bat¬
talion at the battle of Salamanca, and the 1st battalion 42nd at the storming of Fort St. Michael and
during the siege of Burgos, as also in the retreat to Portugal. Served also the campaign of 1815, and
commanded the 42nd at the battle of Quatre Bras, after Sir Robert Macara was killed, and was slightly
wounded in the hip and severely on the left shoulder. Sir Robert has received a medal and two clasps
for Busaco, Fuentes d'Onor, and Salamanca.
98 Sir Neil Douglas served with the 79th at the siege of Copenhagen, in 1807 ; with the expedition
to Sweden, in 1808 ; and subsequently to Portugal and Spain, including the battle of Corunna. Ex¬
pedition to Walcheren, and siege of Flushing, in 1809 ; the Peninsular campaigns from Dec. 1809
to Jan. 1811, and again from April 1813, to the end of that war in 1814, including the defence of
Cadiz, and battle of Busaco—wounded through the left shoulder joint by a ball, and by another in the
left arm ; battles of the Pyrenees, Nivelle, Nive, and Toulouse. Served also the campaign of 1815,
and was severely wounded through the right knee by a ball, and contused from a ball hitting a button,
at Quatre Bras. Sir Neil has received a cross for the battles of the Pyrenees, Nivelle, Nive, and
Toulouse.
99 Lord Tweeddale served in the Peninsula as an Assistant-Quarter-Master-General, and has re¬
ceived a medal for the battle of Vittoria, in which action he was wounded, as also at Busaco. Served
also in the American war, and was again wounded.
100 Sir Frederick Trench served in Sicily in 1806 and 7 ; at Walcheren, in 1809 ; in the Penin¬
sula, in 1811 ; and in Holland, in 1814.
101 Lord Saltoun served in Sicily, in 1806 and 7 ; Sir John Moore’s campaign in 1808-9, including
the battle of Corunna. Expedition to Walcheren 1809. Went to Cadiz in April 1811, and re¬
mained with the army until the end of the Peninsular war in 1814, and was present at the storming of
Seville, passage of the Bidassoa, battle of the Nivelle, actions of the 9th, 10th, and 12th Dec. 1813 in
front of Bidart, passage of the Adour, blockade of Bayonne and repulse of the sortie. Served also the
campaign of 1815, including the battles of Quatre Bras and Waterloo, and the storming of Peronne.
In Dec. 1841 he embarked in command of reinforcements for China, and commanded a Brigade at the
attack and capture of Chin Kiang Foo.
102 Major-General Wyndham served the Peninsular campaigns of 1808, 9, 11, and 13, including
the actions of Roleia, Vimiera, Benevente, Albuhera, Usagre, Morales de Toro, Vittoria, and the Py¬
renees. Served also the campaign of 1815, and was severely wounded at Waterloo.
