1 General Maitland served in the campaign of 1846-47 against the Kaffirs as Military Secretary to Sir Peregrine
Maitland (Brevet of Major and Medal). Served the Eastern campaign of 1854 as Deputy Assistant Adjutant
General to the 4th Division, including the battles of Alma, Balaklava, and Inkerman (dangerously wounded), and
siege of Sebastopol (Medal with four Clasps, Knight of the Legion of Honor, 5th Class of the Mediidie, and
Turkish Medal).
2 Sir Henry Warre, while employed on the Staff in Canada in 1845-46, examined and reported upon the river
communications (2,300 miles) between Montreal and Red River Settlement, with a view to the transport of troops;
also in surveying and reporting upon the various settlements in the Oregon Territory and on various Islands on the
coast of the Pacific. Served in the Crimean campaign from March 1855, including the siege and fall of Sebasto¬
pol ; after Colonel Shadforth was killed he commanded the 57th Regt., and was present at the assaults of the Redan
on the 18th June and 8th Sept.; also at the bombardment and surrender of Kinbourn (Medal with Clasp, CB., 5th
Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal). Commanded the 57th on the line of posts on the Taptee River in co¬
operation with the Central India Field Force in 1858. Also in the war of 1861 in New Zealand, and at the assault on
the rebel Maori positions on the Kaitikara River on the 4th June 1863. Afterwards, as Colonel on the Staff, com¬
manded the Troops in the province of Taranaki—under martial law—during the whole of the operations on the West
Coast in 1863-66, was present and in command of the Troops in the action at Poutoko 2na Oct. 1863, at the
assaults and capture of the rebel Maori strongholds at Ahuahu and Kaitak4 in March 1864, and Mataitawa and To
Arei in Oct. 1864, also the occupation of Opunaki and subsequent operations at Warea and Te Puru, and in com¬
mand of the Field Force which was ordered to meet the troops from the South, opened the coast fine of 150 miles
from Taranaki to Wanganui. Was specially meutioned in Sir Duncan Cameron’s despatches for his conduct during
the war, and received the pension for distinguished conduct for his services in New Zealand (Medal).
4 Colonel Harvey w'as attached by the Government to the service of the British National Society for Aid to the
Sick and Wounded in the Franco-German war of 1870-71, and was awarded the Bavarian Order of Merit. Served
in the operations against Sekukuni in 1878 as Staff Officer for the Transvaal. Served in the Zulu war of 1879 as
Staff Officer of No. 5 Column, and afterwards as Brigade Major 1st Brigade, and Deputy Assistant Quarter Master
General in the 1st Division (Brevet of Major, Medal with Clasp). [See also Civil Decorations for Gallantry,

5 Major Kennedy served with the 99th Regiment in the Zulu war of 1879, and was present in the action of
Inyezane and in the engagement at Gingindhlovu (Medal with Clasp).
c Major Cotton served with the 99th Regiment throughout the Zulu war of 1879 (Medal with Clasp).
7 Major Harford served throughout the Zulu war of 1879, first as Staff Officer of the 3rd Regiment of Natal
Native Contingent (two battalions), and subsequently as Second Staff Officer of “ Clarke’s Column ” (Medal with
Clasp).
8 Major Carter was employed in the Khyber Pass on the Lines of Communication during the Afghan war in
1879 (Medal).
9 Major Denniss served in the Afghan war of 1879, first in the 2nd, and afterwards in the 1st Division of the
Peshawur Valley Field Force (Medal).
10 Major Hanson served with the 99th Regiment throughout the Zulu war of 1879, and was present in the en¬
gagement at Gingindhlovu (Medal with Clasp).
11 Captain Bowhill served with the Nile Expedition in 1884-85, and was present in the engagement at Kirbekan
(Medal with two Clasps, and Khedive’s Star).
14 Captain Hill served in the Afghan war in 1879-80, first with the 2nd Division Peshawur Valley Field Force,
and afterwards with the 2nd Division Cabul Field Force (Medal).
15 Captain Alexander served with the 99th Regiment throughout the Zulu war of 1879, and was present in the
engagements of Inyezane and Gingindhlovu (Medal with Clasp).
16 Captain Rowden served with the Mounted Infantry in the Zulu war of 1879, an(l was present in the engage- .
ment of Inyezane and during the investment of Ekowe (mentioned in despatches, Medal with Clasp).
18 Captain Macmullen served in the Egyptian war in 1882, and was present at the battle of Tel-ei-Kebir (Medal
with Clasp, and Khedive’s Star).
19 Captain Jones served with the 99th Regiment throughout the Zulu war of 1879, including the investment of
Ekowe (Medal with Clasp).
20 Captain Payne served with the 99th Regiment in the Zulu war of 1879, and was present during the investment
of Ekowe (Medal with Clasp).

12 Major Cook and Captains Graham and Whyte served with the 63rd Regiment in Southern Afghanistan in

15 Captain Smith served with the 63rd Regiment as Adjutant in Southern Afghanistan in 1879-80 (Medal). Served

19 Captain Sitwellserved in the Afghan war in 1879-80 with the Koorum Division, including the Zaimusht Lxpedi-
;tion (Medal). Served in the Egyptian war of 1882 with the 1st Battalion of the Shropshire Light Infantry, and
was present at the occupation of Kafr Dowar and the surrender of Damietta (Medal, and Khedive’s Star).
