2 Lt.ColonelDiikins served with the 20th Regiment in the Crimea from the 26th January 1855, including the siege and
fall 0f Sebastopol; was also present at the capture of Kinbourn (Medal with Clasp, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish
Medal). Served in the Indian campaign of 1857-58, and was present at the actions of Chanda, Umeerpore, and Sultan-
pore, siege and capture of Lucknow', subsequent operations in Oude, and affair of Meangunge (Brevet of Maior,
Medal with Clasp).
3 Major Swettenham served with the 31st Regiment in the Crimea from 22nd May 1855, and was present at the
siege and fall of Sebastopol, and attacks of the Redan on the 18th June and 8th September (Medal with Clasp, and
Turkish Medal). Also served throughout the campaign in the north of China in i860, including the action of Sinho
and storming of Tangku (Medal with Clasp for the Taku Forts).
Major Bayley served with the 31st Regiment in the Crimea from 22nd May 1855, including the siege and fall
of Sebastopol and attacks of the 18th June and 8th September (Medal with Clasp, and Turkish Medal). Served
tluring the operations against the Taepings in the vicinity of Shanghai in April and May 1862, resulting in th©
taking of the stockade of Nanhsiang, capture by escalade of th walled cities of Kadin, Tsinpoo, and Tsolin, the
fortified town of Najow, and the affair at Nanhsiang.
5 Captain Pepper served with the 31st Regiment in the Crimea from 22nd May 1855, including the siege and fall
of Sebastopol and attacks of the 18th June and 8th Sept. (Medal with Clasp, and Turkish Medal). Present at the
repulse of the Taeping rebels from Shanghai on 24th Aug. 1862.
6 Captain Jebb served with the 31st Regiment throughout the campaign in the north of China in i860, including
acti0n of Sinho and storming of Tangku (Medal with Clasp for the Taku Forts).
Captain Gardiner served with the 31st Regiment throughout the operations in the north of China in i860, and
was present at the storming of Tangku (Medal with Clasp for the Taku Forts). Served with the Commissariat during
the operations against the Taepings in the vicinity of Shanghai in April and May 1862, resulting in the taking of the
stockade of Nanhsiang, capture by escalade of the walled cities of Kadin, Tsinpoo, and Tsolin, the fortified town of
Najow, and the affair at Nanhsiang and relief of Kading.
qi! Captain Lambert served with the 31st Regiment during the operations against the Taepings in the vicinity of
Shanghai in April and May 1862, including the capture of the stockade at Nanhsiang, the walled city of Kadin, affair
at Nanhsiang, and relief of Kadin.
,10 Captain Hart accompanied Sir Garnet Wolseley to the Gold Coast in September 1873 on special service. Trained
the Sierra Leone Company of Russell's Regiment and commanded it throughout the Ashanti war of 1873-74,
including the repulse of the Ashanti army at Abrakrampa during the 5th and 6th November 1873, the attack and
capture of Adubiassie, battle of Amoaful, attack and capture of Becquah, the advanced guard engagement of
Jarbinbah where with his company he carried the village by a rush, drove out the enemy and pursued them
beyond till ordered to halt (slightly wounded) ; took part in the advanced guard skirmishes and ambuscade affairs
Adwabin and the river Ordah, battle of Ordahsu and capture of Coomassie. In addition to his other duties
end those of Adjutant of Russell’s Regiment from the battle of Amoaful to the end of the war. Was also attached
to the Quarter Master General’s Department during the campaign for the purpose of surveying roads and positions,
surveyed Gape Coast and the greater part of its environs. Accompanied the scouting party north of the Prah for
military sketching purposes, and made the surveys of the road and scenes of action from the Prah to Coomassio
(twice mentioned in despatches, Medal with Clasp).
