was repulsed with great loss. Governor Sir George Grey, in two despatches to Earl Grey, the Secretary of State
for the Colonies, reported,—“ that the firmness and decision with which Captain Laye acted had saved the country
from serious and protracted rebellion.” He received the special approbation of Her Majesty through Earl Grey
in the following terms,—“ I have it especially in command to assure you of the sense which Her Majesty entertains
of the firmness with which Captain Laye acted upon the occasion of the attack of the Natives on the town of
Wanganui, and of the gallant conduct of himself and the detachment under his orders on that occasion.” He
was mentioned in the Government Gazette and despatches, received the Brevet of Major, and Medal. In 1855 he
joined the Staff* in Turkey, and was appointed Assistant Military Secretary to Lord William Paulet commanding
the Troops on the Bosphorus.
181 Major General Forrest served with the 4th Dragoon Guards the Eastern campaign of 1854-55, including the
battles of Balaklava and Inkerman, siege of Sebastopol, night attack on Russian outposts 19th Feb. 1855, and battle
of Tchernaya (Medal with three Clasps, Brevet of Lt.Colonel, Sardinian and Turkish Medals, and 5th Class of the
Medjidie).
122 Major General the Hon. J. W. B. Macdonald served the Eastern campaign of 1854 as Aide de Camp to the Duke of
Cambridge, including the battles of Alma (horse shot), Balaklava, and Inkerman (horse shot), siege of Sebastopol,
and sortie of 26th October (Brevet of Lt.Colonel, Medal with four Clasps, CB., Knight of the Legion of Honor, 5th
Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal).
123 Major General Baumgartner served in the Eastern campaign of 1854-55 withthe 28thRegt., including the battles
of Alma and Inkerman, siege and fall of Sebastopol, and affair on the 18th June in the Cemetery (succeeded to the
command of the Regt.); was wounded in the Trenches 17th Aug. 1855 (Medal with three Clasps, CB., Sardinian and
Turkish Medals, and 4th Class of the Medjidie).
124 Major General G. C. Clarke served the Eastern campaign of 1854-55 with the Scots Greys, including the affair
1 of M'Kenzie’s Farm, battles of Balaklava (sabre cut on the neck), Inkerman, and Tchernaya, siege and fall of
Sebastopol (Medal with three Clasps, Brevet of Lt.Colonel, Knight of the Legion of Honor, 5th Class of the Medjidie,
! and Turkish Medal).
125 Major General Fordyce served the Eastern campaign of 1854, and up to the 16th June 1855, with the 47th
| Regt., including the battles of Alma (contusion of left foot) and Inkerman, capture of Balaklava, siege of Sebas-
1 topol. and sortie of 26th October 1854 (Medal with four Clasps, Brevet of Lt.Colonel, CB., 5th Class of the Medjidie,
! and Turkish Medal).
126 Major General Whimper served with the 98th Regt. on the China expedition (Medal) and was present at the
1 capture of Chin Kiang Foo. Served with the 55th Regt. in the Eastern campaign of 1854, including the battle of Alma
—severely wounded and horse killed (Medal with Clasp, Brevet of Lt.Colonel, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish
Medal).
127 M^jor General Lejth served in the 1st Bombay Fusiliers in Karack, in the Persian Gulf, from 1838 to 1841. Punjaub
campaign of 1848-49, present at the siege and capture of Mooltan, led the storming party at the capture of the city
(Brevet of Major), and was dangerously wounded, losing his left arm, which was twice severed by sabre cuts from
: two of the enemy, both of whom he cut down; ball in right shoulder (still unextracted), besides other sabre cuts on
j right arm, &c. (Medal with Clasp); highly complimented for his distinguished gallantry, and appointed to the Staflf
i of the Army in the Adjutant General’s Department. Reappointed Adjutant General of Division from 1854 to i860,
! during the mutinies, under General Sir Henry Roberts.
128 Major General Kelly served withthe 3i8tRegt. in the Crimea from 22ndMay to the end of June 1855, including
,i the attack of the outworks of Sebastopol on the 18th of June (Medal with Clasp, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish
i! Medal). Served in the Indian campaign of 1857-58; commanded a Wing of the 38th Regiment at the battle of
i Cawnpore on 6th Dec. 1857, and the same day commanded a Brigade in the defence of the enemy’s captured camp
L repulsing two attacks and capturing three guns; commanded three Companies of the 38th with a Troop of 9th Lan-
| cers and some Punjaub Cavalry against the villages of Whera and Nuttypore; commanded the 38th Regt. when
' escorting the siege-train from Mynpore to Cawnpore, also at the storm and capture of Meeangunge, and attack of
j the Dilkoosha; present at the taking of the Martiniere; 2nd in Command of the Regt. at the siege and capture
, of Lucknow; commanded the Right Wing 38th Regt., with two Companies of the 84th and two of the 90th attached,
' for the capture of the Queen’s Palace—nine guns of various calibre fell into his hands; commanded the 38th from
23rd March to 9th June 1858, and was present at the affairs of Barree and Nuggur in Oude; commanded the 3rd
Brigade from 27th March 1858 until its reduction (slightly wounded on the head by a musket-ball on 15th March,
j repeatedly mentioned in despatches, Medal with Clasp, and CB.).
129 Major General Ponsonby served in the Crimean campaign with the Grenadier Guards from the 13th August 1855
to the end of the Russian war, and was present at the siege and fall of Sebastopol (Medal with Clasp, 3rd Class
of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal).
130 Major General Bourke served with the 17th Regiment the campaign of 1838-39 in Afifghanistan and Beloochistan,
including the storm and capture of Ghuznee (Medal) and of Khelat, and various skirmishes. Served also in the
Crimea at the siege of Sebastopol in command of the Regiment from Dec. 1854 to Feb. 1855 (Medal with Clasp,
I Turkish Medal, and 5th Class of the Medjidie).
131 Major General Erskine served with the 33rd Regt. in the Eastern campaign of 1854-55, including the battle of
Inkerman and siege of Sebastopol; he commanded the piquets of the Light Division on the 14th Oct. 1854, when they
• repulsed the attack made on them by the enemy (Medal with two Clasps, Brevet of Lt.Colonel, 5th Class of the
: Medjidie, and Turkish Medal).
132 Major General Wynyard served with the Grenadier Guards in the Crimea from April 1855, including the siege
and fall of Sebastopol (Medal with Clasp, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal).
133 Major General Pattle served with the 16th Lancers throughout the campaign in Affghanistan under Lord
Keane, and was present at the siege and capture of Ghuznee (Medal). Also the campaign on the Sutlej in 1846,
j including the affair of Buddiwal, and battles of Aliwal (wounded) and Sobraon (Medal and one Clasp). Served in
; China as Brigadier in command of the Cavalry throughout the campaign of i860, including the action of Sinho, and
those of the iSttLand 21st Sept., also the surrender of Pekin (mentioned in despatches, CB., Medal with two Clasps).
, 134 Major General Ingall served the Sutlej campaign of 1845-46 with the 62nd Regiment, including the battles of
; Ferozeshah (wounded) and Sobraon (Medal and one Clasp). Served also in the Crimea from 13th Nov. 1854 to 18th
i June 1855, including the siege of Sebastopol, the sortie of 6th April, and attack on the Quarries on the 8th June—-
wounded (Medal with Clasp, CB., Knight of he Legion of Honor. Sardinian and Turkish Medals, a ad 5th Class of the
• Medjidie).
135 Major General Walker served the Eastern campaign of 1854 as Aide de Camp to the Earl of Lucan, including the
battles of Alma, Balaklava, and Inkerman, and siege of Sebastopol; was also at the Cavalry affair the day pre-
■ vious to Alma; at the surprise of the Russian rear-guard at M'Kenzie’s Farm; and served as a volunteer on board
, TIM.8. Sellerophon at the bombardment of Sebastopol on the 17th October (Medal with four Clasps, 5th Class of the
' Medjidie, and Turkish Medal). Served in the field in India in 1859, first in command of a Field Force at Secrora in
Oude, near which place he defeated the rebels on 27th April, and afterwards in command of the Column which accom-
Ipanied Sir Hope Grant to the Nepaul Frontier, including the action of the Jerwah Pass (Medal). Served in China
- throughout the campaign of i860 as Assistant Qr.Master General of Cavalry, and was present at the actions of the
; 12th August, 18th and 21st Sept., and in the advance on Pekin (CB., Medal with Clasps). Served in the campaign
( of 1866 in Bohemia and Moravia as British Military Commissioner at the Head Quarters of the Second Prussian
Army under H.R.H. the Crown Prince, and was present at the battles of Nachod and Kdniggratz (Medal). The
. 2nd Class of the Red Eagle with Swords offered to him by the King of Prussia he was prevented from accepting
! by existing regulations, but having received permission to accept and wear the 1866 Medal it was forwarded to him
• directly by the King of Prussia, accompanied by an autograph letter from His Majesty. Served throughout the
f Franco-German war in 1870-71, as British Military Commissioner at the Head Quarters of the 3rd German Army
under H.R.H. the Crown Prince of Prussia, and was present at the battles of Weissemburg, Worth, and Sedan, and
throughout the investment of Paris, and received the permission of Her Majesty to accept and wear the Iron Cross,
and the Medal granted at the termination of the campaign.
136Major General Stannus servedinthe campaign of 1842 in Affghanistan, includingthe forcingof the Khyber Pass,
and battle ofMamoo Khail (Medal). Commanded the personal escort of Sir Hugh Gough at the battle of Maharajpore,
and throughout the Gwalior campaign of 1843-44 (mentioned in despatches Bronze Star). Served throughout the
Sutlej campaign of 1845-46, with the Governor General’s Body Guard at the battles of Moodkee and Ferozeghah, and
